Lagos state to vaccinate 1.5 million dogs for free

The Lagos State Government has disclosed that no fewer than 1.5 million dogs will be vaccinated within the next two weeks, during the free anti-rabies vaccination campaign embarked upon to prevent deaths of animals in the State.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya stated this today at the flag-off of the vaccination campaign held at the palace of Oba Ayangburen of Ikorodu.
She noted that Lagos pioneered the campaign exercise in the country, stating that the vaccination would take place yearly for the next three years to be effective on dogs.

Olusanya observed that a lot of the dogs in the State are not registered or licensed hence a lot of rabid dogs could be on the prowl, stressing the need for vaccination to prevent rabies.
The Commissioner urged pet owners as responsible citizens to bring their dogs and cats for the exercise, noting that the State Government, being a responsive government, has made the exercise free of charge for the citizenry.

She said: “Dogs are the major source of transmitting the dreaded rabies disease when unvaccinated. It is, therefore, imperative as a responsible and responsive government under the able leadership of Mr. Governor, Babajide Sanw-Olu, to champion the global goal of eradicating the disease, which is majorly curtailed through deliberate annual vaccination of our pets”.

“With an estimated 1.5 million dogs in the State, I hereby enjoin all individuals, corporate organisations, communities to collaborate towards more responsible dog ownership to curb the stray of animals in the environment”, Olusanya noted.
The Commissioner informed that the exercise would take place in the five divisions of the State including Veterinary Clinic, beside LASPOTECH Second Gate, opposite Access Bank, Odogunyan, Ikorodu; Veterinary Centre, Epe Local Government Compound, Orita Marun Epe; Veterinary Clinic, opposite Bethel Church, Beside Alesh Hotel Ajah and the Veterinary Clinic by Randle General Hospital, Benson Street, Surulere.

Others are the Veterinary Clinic at Aiyedoto Farms Settlement, Agric Road, Ojo; Veterinary Clinic on Beach Road, Opposite General Hospital, Badagry and the Animal Hospital on Old Abeokuta Motor Road, beside LSADA’s Office, Opposite DSTV Office, Oko-Oba Agege.

Urging residents to ensure the registration and yearly vaccination of pets and other animals, the Commissioner said the enrolment could be done at government veterinary hospitals, clinics and government registered private animal health care centres.

Earlier, the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, Dr. Olaniran Alabi, noted that an estimated 70,000 people globally die of rabies every year, adding that less than five percent of dogs are vaccinated in Nigeria due to high cost of the vaccines.
Alabi, who was represented by Dr. Mairo Kachalla, revealed that the disease can be transmitted through the bite of an infected animal or man, with 99% fatality if efficient post-exposure prophylaxis treatment is not instituted early.
He said that rabies is a highly fatal disease affecting all warm-blooded animals but despite the high fatality, the disease is 100% preventable through mass dog vaccination and enlightenment campaigns, pointing out that dogs account for the highest percentage of human deaths resulting from rabies.
Dr. Kachalla said that the World Organisation for Animal Health(OIE) recommends that at least 70% of dogs should be vaccinated annually for three consecutive years in order to break the transmission cycle of rabies and, consequently, eliminate the disease.

According to him, rabies is one of the priority Transboundary Animal Diseases and has remained endemic in Nigeria since it was first reported in 1912

  • Senate calls for NAFDAC’s investigation of cosmetics manufacturing

Senate calls for NAFDAC’s investigation of cosmetics manufacturing

The Senate on Tuesday adopted a resolution asking the National Agency for Foods and Drug Administration to investigate the procedures in place for the certification of quality and safety of cosmetics and propose a way forward for accountability.

The resolution followed a motion, “need for the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control to move swiftly to regulate formulation and distribution of cosmetics” sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu representing Lagos Central Senatorial district.

Tinubu in the lead debate noted that the quality and standard of cosmetic products fall within the responsibility of NAFDAC, noting that the nation has been saturated with substandard products thereby posing hazards to users.

The trend, she said, was attributed to the proliferation of small and medium enterprises and businesses whose stock in trade is the formulation of beauty products which ranges from lotions to oils, scrubs and soap, with many labelled handmade.

She insisted that the products must pass through toxicology tests and be certified for safety before they are released for sales.

Worried that it is impossible to determine that hygiene, quality assurance and good manufacturing practices are adhered to in the formulation of these processes, contributing, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani representing Enugu East Senatorial district said NAFDAC must protect users of cosmetics by ensuring standard.

He pointed out the magic of advertisers who tend to convince people through their adverts through the public media, saying that only approved cosmetic products should be allowed to be advertised.

Senator Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe in his explanation allayed fears that cosmetic or any other chemical has a devastating effect on the body, hence, regulation of cosmetic and similar products must be taken seriously.

He said most of the traditional medicine and herbs are not licensed, saying NAFDAC has a lot to do to sanitise the system.

Senator Ladi Daadu’t explained the dangers of unregulated production of sachet and table water. She said production of water was the least monitored and unregulated products.

After a similar contribution from Senator Mathew Urhogide, the Senate sustained the prayers directing NAFDAC to rise to its duty.

Bawa to face Senate screening for EFCC Chairmanship

Nigeria Senate on Tuesday adopted a resolution that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Chairmanship nominee, Abdulrasheed Bawa will be screened at plenary.

Senate took the resolution after the executive’s communication on the nomination of Bawa was announced by the Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan.

The development is a departure from the past, where nominees of President Muhammadu Buhari would first pass through Senate Committee scrutiny before a revert report is turned in for consideration by Committee of the whole.

The Senate President said, screening will hold at the plenary in line with the tradition of the Senate.

He said: “The screening of the Chairman of EFCC will be done in the plenary in keeping with our tradition.”

President Buhari had nominated Abdulrasheed Bawa as substantive Chairman of the EFCC and asked the leadership of the National Assembly to confirm the appointment.

In a letter to the Senate President, Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, the President said he was acting in accordance with Paragraph 2(3) of Part1, CAP E1 of EFCC Act 2004.

Bawa, 40, is a trained EFCC investigator with vast experience in investigation and prosecution of Advance Fee Fraud cases, official corruption, bank fraud, money laundering, and other economic crimes.

He has undergone several specialized trainings in different parts of the world, and was one of the pioneer EFCC Cadet Officers in 2005.

Bawa holds a B.Sc degree in Economics, and Masters in International Affairs and Diplomacy.

The last screening of the anti-graft boss was in the 8th Senate during the leadership of Senator Bukola Saraki which turned down the appointment of Ibrahim Magu as a result of the controversial security report about him.
