Avoid These 5 Foods Before Exercising to Prevent Stomach Issues

Must read

Although these foods are generally healthy, consuming them right before a workout can negatively impact your exercise routine and cause stomach discomfort.

What we eat affects our bodies differently, especially during physical activity. While some nutrients can boost athletic performance and increase strength and energy, others can lead to stomach problems or fatigue. Here are five foods you should avoid before hitting the gym:

1. Protein Shakes
Although many people consume protein shakes before working out to support muscle growth and recovery, these shakes aren’t ideal as a pre-workout snack. Protein is not the most effective nutrient to consume right before exercising because it slows down digestion. Instead, opt for carbohydrates, which provide energy and are easier to digest.

2. Fried Foods
Foods like doughnuts, puff puff, and chips can interfere with your workout by hindering blood flow. These fried foods are tough to digest, causing your body to divert blood to your stomach to help with digestion, rather than to your arms and legs where it’s needed during exercise. This can make you feel sluggish and prevent you from performing at your best.

3. Dairy Products
Dairy products, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt, contain both protein and fat, which can upset the gastrointestinal tract, especially when exercising in hot weather. Even if you are not lactose intolerant, dairy can cause discomfort or even lead to vomiting during intense physical activity.

4. Nuts and Avocados
While nuts and avocados are rich in healthy monounsaturated fats, they are not the best choice before a workout, especially cardio sessions. These fatty foods can disrupt blood flow, causing nausea, heartburn, and bloating. This can leave you feeling heavy and slow, negatively impacting your exercise performance.

5. Cereals and Granola
Though high-fiber foods like cereals and granola can improve gut health, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, they are best avoided right before a workout. The body does not absorb or digest fiber quickly, which means it passes through the gut, potentially causing the urge to have a bowel movement during your workout.

To optimize your workout and avoid stomach issues, be mindful of what you eat before exercising.
