Bello Turji, a notorious bandit leader, fled to Maradun, Zamfara State, as the Nigerian military intensified its offensive against bandit groups in the Northwest.
Local sources reported that Turji’s loyalists moved on motorcycles late Sunday and early Monday, transporting wounded gang members. The bandits traveled through Galadi, Damaga, Rudunu, and Danbenchi before heading toward Garsa/Kadanya in the Bayan Ruwa area.
Sources suggest that bandits are regrouping in Rudunu, Bankamawa, and Farfaru, all known for armed criminal activities. Bayan Ruwa remains a key route for terrorists. The Nigerian Air Force targeted terrorist hideouts in the area during airstrikes in August 2024.
Some of Turji’s followers reportedly took refuge in Garsa/Kadanya under the protection of Jummo Smally, a former rival now allied with Turji. The reasons for this new alliance remain unclear.
A defense intelligence source confirmed Turji’s flight to Maradun. Security forces are closely monitoring the movements of the bandits. They are tracking the bandits to identify anyone traveling with them, including women, children, or captives.
The source assured that Turji’s group has no safe haven left and emphasized that the military will act to protect affected communities.
