Bandits Abduct Over 85 People, Kill Residents on Kaduna-Abuja Expressway

In a renewed wave of terror, bandits have struck along the Kaduna-Abuja expressway, abducting more than 85 individuals, including both travelers and local residents. The attacks, which occurred between Thursday and Sunday, also resulted in the tragic deaths of at least four residents in the Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed a bandit attack on the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway near Katari, explaining that security forces engaged in a fierce battle with the assailants. While the police acknowledged the crossfire injuring some travelers, they did not provide details on the abduction.

Among those injured in the crossfire were Jibrin Tasiu, Jummai Abubakar, Zafira Abubakar, AbdulKarim Nurudeen, Chinedu Jerry Moneke, and Ayo James, who were promptly taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Despite the heavy presence of the military along the highways, bandit attacks continue to afflict villages near Katari, prompting calls for increased security measures. The District Head of Bishini, Yohana Sarki, urged the government to deploy more security operatives to protect the vulnerable communities.

Residents recounted harrowing experiences, with reports suggesting that over 30 travelers were abducted, and 55 others were taken by a separate group of criminals in neighboring villages. Villagers highlighted the urgent need for enhanced security measures and equipment for local vigilantes to complement the efforts of security agencies.

The Chief Imam of Katari Central Mosque, Suleiman Mohammed, confirmed the Sunday attack, expressing concern over the increasing frequency of banditry in the region. Eyewitnesses reported that the bandits, suspected to be foreigners speaking the Fulani language, blocked the major highway, leading to the abduction of numerous travelers.

As the affected communities grapple with the aftermath of the attacks, calls for government intervention and enhanced security persist, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive strategy to address the escalating security challenges in the region.
