Bayelsa Deputy Governor Peter Akpe Promises Humble, People-Focused Leadership

Newly sworn-in Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Pastor Peter Akpe, has pledged to lead with humility and a people-centred approach, describing his appointment as a privilege to serve rather than a personal achievement.

Akpe, a provincial pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and former Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri, was sworn in on February 25, 2026, by the Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye, at the Government House in Yenagoa. His inauguration followed confirmation by the Bayelsa State House of Assembly.

Speaking at a reception held at the D.S.P. Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, Akpe said his new role would be guided by accountability, faith and service to the people. “This responsibility is a privilege to serve Bayelsa with the fear of God, respect for the people and commitment to what is right,” he said. The deputy governor expressed appreciation to Governor Douye Diri, the House of Assembly and other stakeholders for their support. He pledged to work with the governor to advance policies aimed at improving livelihoods and strengthening institutions.

Former Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Bayelsa Elders Council, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd.), described the appointment as timely and urged residents to support the administration. Akpe fills the vacancy created by the death of the former deputy governor in 2025.
