Bayelsa Residents Struggle with Worsening Floods Amid Heavy Rains

By Eunice Nnachi, Yenagoa

As heavy rains continue to batter Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, residents living along streets opposite the Medical University are facing severe challenges due to worsening floods.

The situation has been exacerbated by the construction of a new road, which has allegedly blocked drainage systems and exacerbated the flooding in the area.

Residents have expressed their frustration and despair, with one anonymous resident stating, “This our compound is always flooded each time rains falls. If you come here when rain is falling, you will definitely swim inside the compound.”

The flooding has caused significant damage to property and disrupted daily life, with residents forced to raise their belongings and sleep on the floor until the water recedes.
The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier predicted that about 19 states, including Bayelsa, would experience flash flooding this year.

The Bayelsa State Government has announced plans to identify higher grounds to build makeshift relief camps in preparation for the floods.
Residents are calling on the government to intervene and provide assistance, as many are unable to afford the cost of relocating or repairing the damage caused by the floods. The situation highlights the need for proactive measures to address the challenges posed by climate change and ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable communities.
