Boko Haram attack Yobe State September 2024

By   Milcah   Tanimu

A devastating Boko Haram attack in Yobe State in September 2024 has resulted in the recovery of 37 bodies from Mafa, a town in the Tarmuwa Local Government Area. The attack, part of a series of violent insurgent actions, has claimed the lives of at least 87 people.

The victims’ remains have been transported to Babbangida General Hospital, where a mass burial is scheduled for 10 a.m. today. Yobe State Deputy Governor Hon. Idi Barde Gubana and other senior officials are expected to attend the burial at the Babangida Emir’s Palace.

The assault occurred around 4 PM as villagers returned from their agricultural work. Boko Haram insurgents, arriving on over 50 motorcycles, set fire to homes and businesses, causing extensive damage.

This recent attack follows previous Boko Haram violence in the region, including last month’s incident that displaced 475 households and affected over 2,390 individuals across four Mafa ward communities.

Local sources suggest this attack may be in retaliation for villagers who provided intelligence leading to a successful military operation against the insurgents last month.

Yobe State Police Command spokesman Dungus Abdulkarim confirmed the attack, though detailed reporting is hampered by network issues. Brigadier-General Dahiru Abdulsalam (Retired), Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, confirmed that military forces have been deployed to the area.

Mafa village is located near Shekau village, the birthplace of the deceased Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau.
