A bomb explosion has occurred at Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque in the Gamboru Market area of Maiduguri, Borno State, during evening prayers.
The incident, which happened on Wednesday evening, reportedly resulted in several casualties, with some worshippers feared dead and others injured.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the explosion in a brief statement issued on Wednesday night by its spokesperson, Nahum Daso.
According to the police, the incident was recorded at about 6:00 p.m. while prayers were ongoing at the mosque.
“Ongoing sweeping operations by police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units are underway following a suspected explosion incident at Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque in Gamboru Market today at about 1800hrs during prayers,” the statement read.
Daso said the area had been cordoned off by EOD personnel to ensure public safety, adding that investigations into the incident were ongoing.
He urged residents to remain calm and vigilant as security operations continue, assuring that further updates would be provided.
Witnesses said the suspected explosive device detonated during the Maghrib prayer, causing panic in the area.
