Borno: Primary School Teachers Celebrate as N70,000 Minimum Wage is Implemented

Zulum Pays Best Wage in Northeast – NLC

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Primary school teachers across Borno State celebrated in excitement as Governor Babagana Umara Zulum approved a new N70,000 minimum wage, marking the highest wage for civil servants in the Northeast region.

This comes just a week after civil servants in Borno received their October salaries at the new rate. The Senior Special Assistant on New Media to the Governor, Abdurrahman Bundi, confirmed that the updated salaries for primary school teachers were deposited on Thursday, with many sharing their payment alerts on social media.

Governor Zulum first announced the wage increase on October 10 during a meeting with the Minimum Wage Implementation Committee. In addition to the pay rise, he approved a N3 billion fund to settle entitlements for families of deceased civil servants in Borno State.

Reacting to the implementation, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Borno State Chapter commended the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare. The NLC Chairman, Comrade Inuwa Yusuf, praised Zulum’s leadership, noting, “The Executive Governor has truly served the people, especially the workers.”

Comrade Yusuf explained that after several meetings, a harmonized wage structure was implemented, leading to an outpouring of gratitude from civil servants across the state. “We believe Borno is leading in terms of wage standards in the Northeast. Few states have achieved similar increases, and we commend His Excellency for this remarkable progress,” he stated.
