Borno: Zulum Flags Off Free Eye Surgery for 10,000 Residents

Approves N50,000 Cash Support for Each Cataract Patient

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has inaugurated a large-scale eye care initiative, offering free surgeries to 10,000 residents suffering from visual impairments, including cataracts.

The program was officially launched on Monday and is a joint effort between the Borno State Government and Senator Ali Ndume, who contributed funds for the operation of 500 individuals. Initially designed for 1,000 beneficiaries, the initiative was expanded due to an overwhelming turnout, as announced in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Abdurrahman Bundi.

Expanded Reach for Eye Care

Governor Zulum explained, “We launched a programme to provide medical attention to over 1,000 individuals, focusing on cataract operations. During the exercise, I was struck by the overwhelming number of people in need. Many have not received medical attention in over two years due to the high cost of surgery.”

In response, the governor directed the expansion of the program to accommodate 10,000 patients. According to him, 4,000 cataract surgeries will be conducted in Maiduguri, while 3,000 each will take place in Southern and Northern Borno.

Cash Support for Post-Operative Care

Governor Zulum also approved a cash grant of N50,000 for each patient who undergoes cataract surgery. The funds are intended to assist patients in managing their post-operative care and recovery.

Acknowledging Contributions

Expressing gratitude to Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume and other contributors, Zulum said, “On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, I express my heartfelt appreciation to all who have contributed to this initiative. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our citizens.”

The initiative underscores the governor’s commitment to improving healthcare access and alleviating the financial burden on residents, particularly in underserved areas of Borno State.
