The Nigerians in Diaspora Movement for Democracy has called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the reported declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, urging him to adopt legislative solutions to resolve the ongoing political crisis.
Reacting to the recent suspension of Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly for six months, the group described the situation as alarming and counterproductive to democratic stability.
In an open letter signed by its President, Dr. Samson Idoko, and Secretary General, Patriot John Andrew Onuh, the group appealed to Tinubu to reverse any emergency rule plans and instead enforce legislative measures that would ensure long-term political accountability and peace.
“We urge Mr. President to urgently revisit the emergency rule decision in Rivers State,” the letter read. “Rather than escalate tensions, the use of legislative frameworks can help stabilize the situation and prevent further democratic backsliding.”
The group further recommended that all parties involved in the crisis be subjected to strong disciplinary measures, including a minimum 10-year ban from political activity or holding public office.
“These sanctions will serve as deterrents and help restore order,” the letter stated.
Their call follows the chaos surrounding a protest by the Take-It-Back Movement in Port Harcourt, which was forcefully dispersed by police using tear gas.
