In a swift response to a distress call, personnel from the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder successfully rescued over 250 individuals, including children, from a boat mishap involving the cargo vessel, MV Precious Emmanuel, along the Buguma waterways in the Asari-Toru local government area of Rivers State.
The incident occurred as the commercial boat, laden with goods valued at millions of Naira, was en route from Sangana in Brass local government area of Bayelsa State to the Nembe jetty in Port Harcourt. Tragically, the boat capsized after colliding with a wrecked ship.
Commander of NNS Pathfinder, Commodore Desmond Igbo, confirmed that there were no casualties thanks to the prompt action of the Nigerian Navy operatives. He stressed the importance of adhering to safety protocols, particularly the use of life vests for boat operators and passengers.
Commander Igbo highlighted the multifaceted role of the Nigerian Navy, which includes safeguarding lives alongside combating maritime crimes. He reiterated the importance of wearing life jackets during water transit and disclosed plans to establish an Emergency Maritime Unit in the state.
Samuel Ikpe, a passenger who suffered significant losses, praised the Nigerian Navy for their timely rescue efforts. He called for government support to assist those who lost their livelihoods in the incident.
Similarly, the manager of MV Precious Emmanuel, Mr. Prosper Isokari, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Navy for their intervention, which prevented loss of life. Isokari recounted the harrowing experience and emphasized the critical role played by the Navy personnel in rescuing those aboard the stricken vessel.
The incident underscores the importance of maritime safety measures and the vital role played by agencies like the Nigerian Navy in preserving lives and ensuring the security of waterways.
