BREAKING: NLC Protests at LP Secretariat, Calls for Abure’s Removal

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) staged a protest at the national secretariat of the Labour Party in Abuja on Wednesday, denouncing the party’s planned national convention scheduled for the end of this month and demanding the removal of its National Chairman, Julius Abure.

Accusing Abure of orchestrating a “secret” convention without the involvement of key stakeholders, the NLC leadership vehemently opposed the move, asserting that it undermines the integrity of the party.

The planned convention has sparked a contentious rift between Abure, the NLC, and the House of Representatives caucus, with workers expressing concern that Abure’s actions could jeopardize the future of the Labour Party.

Despite their peaceful demonstration, the protesting workers were denied entry into the party secretariat by law enforcement officers.

The National Working Committee of the Labour Party had earlier accused Ajaero of attempting to replace Abure, triggering a cascade of accusations and counter-accusations between the NLC and the LP leadership.

In response to these developments, the NLC Political Commission issued a directive calling for the mobilization of workers to picket all state secretariats of the Labour Party, scheduled for Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

The political wing of the NLC has labeled the planned convention as illegitimate and is demanding the immediate resignation of Abure as party chairman, advocating instead for the establishment of a caretaker transition committee to organize a fair and inclusive national convention.
