Human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, was arrested on Thursday by armed policemen within the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja, shortly after appearing in solidarity with detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Sowore, a vocal advocate for Kanu’s release, was reportedly whisked away to the FCT Police Command on the orders of the Commissioner of Police. Despite demanding a formal invitation and insisting his lawyer accompany him, he was eventually taken away in a police van.
Confirming the incident, rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong described the arrest as “preposterous,” accusing authorities of undermining the judicial system and calling for Sowore’s immediate release.
The arrest follows Sowore’s participation in the #FreeNnamdiKanu protests on October 20, during which several demonstrators — including Kanu’s lawyer Aloy Ejimakor and his brother Emmanuel Kanu — were arrested and charged with incitement, disturbance, and breach of public peace.
