Senator John Azuta-Mbata has been elected as the 13th President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the leading socio-cultural organization of the Igbo people.
The election took place on Friday in Enugu during the organization’s leadership transition, where Azuta-Mbata emerged as the new leader, succeeding Fidelis Chukwu, whose tenure has concluded.
Azuta-Mbata’s election marks a historic moment for Ohanaeze Ndigbo, as he hails from Rivers State in Nigeria’s South-South region—a significant milestone in the group’s leadership.
The election was conducted through voice voting, resulting in the selection of Azuta-Mbata and 15 others to various executive positions within the organization.
A seasoned politician, Azuta-Mbata previously served as the senator representing Rivers East from 1999 to 2007, bringing extensive legislative and leadership experience to his new role.
