By Abigail Philip David

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to *Yakubu Gowon University* in honor of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd).

The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Monday, following the council’s final meeting for 2024 at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

Idris stated, “The Federal Executive Council has taken the decision to rename the University of Abuja to honor elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon. The institution will now be known as Yakubu Gowon University.”

He explained that the renaming process will proceed to the National Assembly for legislative approval to formalize the change.

In addition, Idris announced that the council will take a recess from December 18, 2024, to January 6, 2025.
