CACOL & CDHR Brief Nigerians on the State of the Nation

By Jabiru Hassan, Kano.

The Center for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) and the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) held a press briefing in Lagos, highlighting key national issues and areas needing urgent government attention.

Key Achievements Noted

  1. Infrastructure Development: Completion of major projects like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Second Niger Bridge. However, key roads like the East-West road remain unfinished.
  2. Economic Diversification: Government initiatives in agriculture and tech, including the National Startup Act, are boosting job creation.
  3. Security Gains: Military efforts have led to the elimination of terrorists and kidnappers, with improved international partnerships and better equipment.

Areas of Concern

  1. Insecurity: Banditry, kidnappings, and insurgency persist, with recent attacks on military bases and communities across Nigeria.
  2. Economic Hardship: Fuel subsidy removal has worsened inflation and poverty, with cash transfer initiatives deemed ineffective.
  3. Healthcare & Education: Strikes, poor funding, and mass emigration of professionals are crippling these sectors.
  4. Corruption: Despite anti-corruption measures, systemic corruption remains widespread, even within anti-graft agencies.
  5. Environmental Challenges: Poor flood management and disaster preparedness require urgent action.
  6. Telecom Tariff Hike: Increased costs will deepen the digital divide, though service improvements are needed.
  7. Freedom of Expression: Crackdowns on journalists and critics persist, with vague cybercrime laws used to suppress dissent.
  8. Tax Reforms: New policies benefit low-income earners and businesses, with tax exemptions on essential goods.
  9. Political Developments: Controversial impeachment of Lagos Assembly Speaker and internal conflicts in PDP raise governance concerns.
  10. Aviation Safety: Suspension of Max Air operations follows multiple incidents, calling for stricter safety regulations.

Conclusion

CACOL and CDHR urge the government to prioritize security, economic stability, corruption control, and improved governance to ensure a better Nigeria.
