Acknowledges Contributions from Agric Ministry, NEMA, and NNPC

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has officially launched the distribution of relief materials to victims of the recent Maiduguri flood. The flood, caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam, has displaced nearly 2 million people in Maiduguri and surrounding areas, with many seeking refuge in approximately 36 camps.

The distribution ceremony was held on Monday at the Bakasi camp along Damboa Road in Maiduguri. Relief packages include 25kg bags of rice, cartons of pasta, and N10,000 in cash.

During the event, Governor Zulum expressed concern about non-displaced individuals flooding the IDP camps, which complicates the distribution efforts. He stated, “We have observed that it is no longer sustainable to keep receiving people in the camps, as many who are not directly affected are coming in.”

In addition to the relief distribution, Governor Zulum announced plans to conduct a thorough assessment of the affected areas to guide future interventions. “We decided to mobilize resources to ensure that every affected individual receives the necessary relief items,” he explained. “We will also assess the communities to verify the actual number of affected individuals.”

Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, representing Borno Central, praised Governor Zulum for his proactive leadership during the crisis. “I commend the governor for his dedication and leadership since the flooding began. He and his team have been actively involved in search and rescue operations and assisting those in need. I also encourage others to support the government’s efforts in aiding the victims,” Senator Lawan said.

Zubaida Umar, Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), detailed her agency’s efforts to aid flood victims. Since the disaster began, NEMA has been providing shelters and mobile water purifiers to ensure access to clean drinking water.

Governor Zulum also acknowledged the contributions from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, NEMA, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), which have been instrumental in supporting the flood victims.

The event was attended by Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, members of the House of Representatives, and the Borno State Executive Council.

  • Borno Flood Disaster: Gov Zulum Appeals for National, International Support

Governor Urges Collective Efforts, Laments Profound Impact

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Borno State Governor, Prof. Umar Zulum, on Friday issued a strong appeal for support from NGOs, national and international organizations, and wealthy individuals to aid victims of the recent flood disaster in the state. He described the destruction as devastating and beyond measure.

In a statewide broadcast, Governor Zulum lamented the profound impact of the flood, which he called a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced in the region. He emphasized that recovery from such a disaster cannot be the government’s responsibility alone but requires collective effort from all stakeholders.

“Fellow citizens of Borno State, in the past few days, we have witnessed devastating floods like never before. Streets, homes, offices, and businesses have been submerged, and immeasurable property has been lost. Countless lives have been upended,” the Governor said.

Prof. Zulum expressed deep empathy for those affected, acknowledging the pain, loss, and uncertainty many are experiencing. He assured residents that the government is committed to doing everything possible to assist those in need.

“The magnitude of the destruction from this devastating flood cannot yet be fully quantified until the water recedes and on-the-spot assessments are conducted. We will establish a multi-stakeholder committee to undertake a sector-by-sector assessment of the losses to guide the recovery and rebuilding process,” he added.

Governor Zulum called on community leaders, business owners, non-governmental organizations (national and international), and wealthy individuals to come together in support of those suffering.

“Unity has always been our strength in Borno. In times like this, we must harness that strength and show empathy and compassion to each other. We are working closely with various federal government agencies, civil society organizations, and the Nigerian military to ensure that relief efforts are streamlined and effective,” he stated.

The Governor urged other stakeholders to collaborate with state agencies to identify the best ways of providing assistance, aiming to create a robust response plan that addresses immediate needs as well as long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts.

“Borno has always been known for its resilience, and we must rely on this to rebound from this disaster. Our recovery process will require innovative thinking and a commitment to rebuilding lost infrastructure and homes,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of leveraging this calamity as an opportunity to invest in sustainable practices and infrastructure that can withstand future natural disasters.

“As we embark on this journey of recovery, I call upon the media to help raise awareness about the ongoing needs of our communities. Your role in disseminating information about how individuals can help and where support and interventions can be directed is invaluable,” Zulum urged.

The Governor extended his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has stepped up to provide humanitarian support, particularly the federal government, the Nigerian military under the leadership of the Theatre Command, Operation Hadin Kai, and all UN agencies that have shown tremendous support and commitment.

“Your humanitarian gesture is invaluable and has not gone unnoticed. While we work towards providing immediate relief, let us come together to create a brighter future for the people of Borno State,” he concluded.

CSOs Urge Akwa Ibom Governor to Approve WASH and ODF Policy Framework to Enhance Public Health

    By Ogenyi Ogenyi, Uyo

The IbomWASH+ cluster has urged Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Umo Eno, and the state executive council to urgently approve the WASH and Open Defecation Free (ODF) policy framework. This move is seen as crucial for safeguarding public health and advancing sanitation in the state.

In a statement issued yesterday in Uyo, the cluster—comprising the African Human Development Center, Better Future Initiative, AkwaMfon Sustainable Development Community Association, Garden Initiative, and NEWSAN—highlighted the importance of these policies. The initiative is supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the SCALE (Strengthening Advocacy at Local Level) Project. The statement was endorsed by Project Director Prof. Gabriel Umoh.

The coalition emphasized that open defecation and inadequate sanitation are major contributors to waterborne diseases, significantly impacting vulnerable populations, especially children. They argue that adopting the policies, including domesticating Executive Order 009, would position Akwa Ibom State as a leader in combating open defecation and ensuring access to clean and safe sanitation facilities.

The policies, which have been pending since the previous administration, are now due for approval. The coalition urged the state executive council to act promptly, stating that the approval is vital for protecting public health and enhancing sanitation standards across the state.

Severe Flooding Hits Northern Sudan, Leaving Dozens Dead and Thousands Homeless

Northern Sudan is reeling from catastrophic flooding that has resulted in numerous fatalities and left thousands homeless. The deluge, triggered by heavy rains, has exacerbated an already dire displacement crisis in the region. According to Qureshi Hussein, spokesperson for the Sudanese Civil Defence, the flooding has claimed 31 lives across northern Sudan.

The floods have further strained the country, which has been grappling with a major displacement crisis due to ongoing conflict. Affected areas now see residents, like Yassin Abdul Wahab, struggling to find shelter. “People are sleeping in the streets, and the situation is very bad,” Wahab reported. Efforts are underway to build temporary shelters from the remnants of destroyed homes.

Since August, the flooding has impacted over 317,000 individuals, displacing approximately 118,000 people. This disaster compounds the already severe displacement crisis that has persisted for nearly 500 days, following the outbreak of conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

  • BURN CEO: Harnessing Carbon Credits to Fund Eco-Friendly Cooking Solutions for Africa**

BURN CEO: Harnessing Carbon Credits to Fund Eco-Friendly Cooking Solutions for Africa**

    By Milcah Tanimu

As Africa faces pressing environmental challenges, there is an urgent need for sustainable solutions that can improve air quality, create jobs, and foster better living conditions. BURN, a leading manufacturer of energy-efficient cook stoves, is at the forefront of this movement, leveraging carbon credits to fund its transformative projects.

    BURN’s Mission and Vision

Peter Scott, CEO of BURN, views Nigeria as a key player in driving both business growth and socio-economic impact. His mission is to reach at least 100 million people in Nigeria, with a particular focus on empowering the nation’s youth. BURN’s strategy involves utilizing carbon credits to finance large-scale initiatives that go beyond profit-making, aiming to transform lives with innovative cooking solutions.

    Addressing Environmental and Health Challenges

BURN produces some of the world’s most affordable, fuel-efficient stoves, including options that use wood, charcoal, LPG, electricity, ethanol, and institutional briquettes. These stoves are designed to reduce fuel usage by 40% to 80%, delivering significant benefits for both people and the environment. Scott’s goal is to ensure that every household in Nigeria has access to a BURN cook stove by 2050.

Sub-Saharan Africa faces severe environmental crises, including deforestation driven by the need for cooking fuel. According to Scott, inefficient stoves contribute to approximately 600,000 deaths annually from smoke inhalation, comparable to emissions from the entire airline industry. BURN aims to mitigate these issues by providing cleaner, more efficient cooking solutions that save lives and reduce carbon emissions.

    Investment and Job Creation

BURN is working on green investment strategies to support its mission. The company anticipates that an initial investment of $2.4 billion could generate over $10 billion in carbon credit revenue, which would be reinvested in Nigeria. BURN plans to offer cook stoves at highly discounted prices—typically $40 stoves will be available for just $5—by leveraging carbon credits.

In addition to environmental benefits, BURN’s initiatives are expected to create substantial job opportunities. With over 1,000 employees in Nigeria and 3,500 across Africa, the company projects scaling its production to 100,000 units per month, with the potential to ramp up to one million units per month within a year.

BURN’s manufacturing facility in Kenya, which operates on renewable energy, serves as a model for future production. The company is exploring the use of renewable energy for electric cooking stoves, highlighting the benefits of investing in renewable infrastructure to power industrial growth and support sustainable development.

    Partnerships for Sustainable Development Goals

BURN’s success will depend on collaborations with the government and other stakeholders. Scott praised the Nigerian government’s commitment to clean cooking initiatives and aims to work closely with them to distribute as many stoves as possible, contributing to local content development.

Although Nigeria lacks indigenous stainless-steel production, BURN plans to source raw materials from China and process them locally. The company’s factory in Kano currently produces 35,000 stoves per month and aims to increase this to one million units per month. Additionally, BURN is exploring international markets, positioning Nigeria as a green manufacturing hub that could compete with China on pricing.

    Long-Term Vision for Sustainable Impact

BURN’s vision extends beyond immediate profits. By subsidizing stove costs through carbon credits, the company aims to make clean cooking solutions affordable for all. BURN’s commitment to reinvestment for social good underscores its role as a pioneer in sustainable development, dedicated to transforming lives and fostering long-term change in Africa’s communities.

BURN’s innovative cooking solutions are set to make a significant impact on the environment, economy, and quality of life across Africa, reaffirming the company’s dedication to driving sustainable development and positive social change.

During his tenure as Commissioner of Water Resources in Benue State, Professor Utsev exhibited a remarkable capacity to confront and resolve the long-standing water scarcity in many areas, exemplifying his ability to translate theoretical expertise into effective solutions.

As Minister, he has brought this same dedication to the national level, leveraging his profound understanding of water challenges to address complex issues like flooding and erosion with a refined and informed perspective. Utsev’s leadership is distinguished by its focus on tangible action rather than mere rhetoric, as he ardently advocates for the implementation of sustainable practices and cutting-edge technologies. His commitment transcends technical expertise, as he is equally dedicated to promoting social equity and inclusivity.

For Utsev, this role represents not just a greater responsibility in a familiar terrain but a call to elevate Nigeria’s global standing. Through his tireless efforts, Utsev is leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s water sector, inspiring a brighter future for generations to come.

Amidst a backdrop of economic uncertainty, where certain influential figures were demonstrating a palpable lack of enthusiasm for their assigned responsibilities, exploiting the downturn of the economy as a pretext to execute their politically motivated agendas aimed at undermining the President’s endeavours, and Nigeria’s democratic status, Engineer Utsev remained steadfast and resolute in his commitment to his ministerial duties.

Undaunted by the turbulent landscape, his actions in the face of this uncomfortable uprising have served as evidence of his strong dedication to the Nigerian people, showcasing a remarkable ability to navigate treacherous political waters with aplomb. Throughout his tenure as Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, he has spearheaded remarkable advancements in augmenting the nation’s water and sanitation infrastructure, leaving an indelible mark on the sector.

As tensions simmered and emotions reached a fever pitch, and while many were quick to dismiss the protesters’ demands, he added his voice to the chorus of reason, passionately advocating for dialogue over dissent. With a profound understanding of the hardships faced by citizens, Minister Utsev recognized that the #EndbadgovernanceinNigeria protest was not merely a call for better governance but a heartfelt cry for a more inclusive and equitable Nigeria. Rather than resorting to force or intimidation, he championed dialogue, understanding that sustainable change can only be achieved through peaceful means.

Minister Utsev acknowledged the legitimacy of the protesters’ concerns while emphasizing the need for constructive engagement, his words of wisdom joining with others to help calm the storm. This created a fertile ground for meaningful discussions, paving the way for sustainable solutions.

Engineer Utsev’s call for dialogue was not merely a political manoeuvre but a genuine reflection of his belief in the transformative power of communication and understanding. He recognized that the protesters were not enemies of the state but young Nigerians who were deeply passionate about their country’s future. His call for dialogue was a testament to his respect for the democratic process and the rights of the Nigerian people, demonstrating a commitment to finding common ground and building a more harmonious society.

Throughout his tenure, Minister Utsev has been a steadfast and dedicated champion of President Tinubu’s vision, working tirelessly to translate the administration’s policies into tangible realities. His commitment to his ministerial duties has been truly remarkable, as he continues to drive innovation and progress in the water resources and sanitation sector with unrelenting passion and energy.

From initiating landmark projects to fostering international partnerships, Minister Utsev’s impact has been felt across the nation, bringing hope and relief to countless citizens. While many were losing hope in the President’s vision and mandate, Utsev remained a beacon of optimism, understanding the necessity of short-term sacrifices for long-term benefits. He possesses a profound understanding of the complexities of successful change, recognizing that positive policies and insightful administrative decisions may initially cause discomfort before yielding beneficial results for all.

As President Tinubu works tirelessly to mitigate the economic downturn, Minister Utsev has been an indispensable ally, providing sage counsel and unwavering support at every turn. Together, they have rolled out palliatives, effected new policies, and invested in international empowerment programs, all aimed at alleviating the suffering of Nigerians. Their synergy is a testament to the power of collaboration and the boundless potential that arises when leaders work in harmony towards a common goal, demonstrating a shining example of effective partnership and collective leadership.

Engineer Utsev’s commitment to his ministerial responsibilities has been in seamless harmony with President Tinubu’s visionary blueprint for a thriving and self-sufficient Nigeria. He has consistently demonstrated a steadfast allegiance to the President’s policies, frequently surpassing the boundaries of his duties to ensure their successful execution. This unwavering support stems not from blind loyalty, but from a deeply shared conviction in a brighter future for Nigeria.

In a governance landscape often marred by corruption, inefficiency, self-aggrandizement, and personal agendas, a rare gem like Engineer Utsev deserves grand recognition for his exceptional dedication to the nation’s well-being. Similarly, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu merits commendation for his boldness and audacity in taking decisive steps that will forever positively transform the country, leaving an indelible mark for future generations to emulate.

Minister Utsev’s inspirational leadership will undoubtedly remain a guiding force, illuminating a brighter future for generations to come.
