Borno: Zulum Launches Relief Distribution for Maiduguri Flood Victims

Acknowledges Contributions from Agric Ministry, NEMA, and NNPC

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has officially launched the distribution of relief materials to victims of the recent Maiduguri flood. The flood, caused by the overflow of the Alau Dam, has displaced nearly 2 million people in Maiduguri and surrounding areas, with many seeking refuge in approximately 36 camps.

The distribution ceremony was held on Monday at the Bakasi camp along Damboa Road in Maiduguri. Relief packages include 25kg bags of rice, cartons of pasta, and N10,000 in cash.

During the event, Governor Zulum expressed concern about non-displaced individuals flooding the IDP camps, which complicates the distribution efforts. He stated, “We have observed that it is no longer sustainable to keep receiving people in the camps, as many who are not directly affected are coming in.”

In addition to the relief distribution, Governor Zulum announced plans to conduct a thorough assessment of the affected areas to guide future interventions. “We decided to mobilize resources to ensure that every affected individual receives the necessary relief items,” he explained. “We will also assess the communities to verify the actual number of affected individuals.”

Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, representing Borno Central, praised Governor Zulum for his proactive leadership during the crisis. “I commend the governor for his dedication and leadership since the flooding began. He and his team have been actively involved in search and rescue operations and assisting those in need. I also encourage others to support the government’s efforts in aiding the victims,” Senator Lawan said.

Zubaida Umar, Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), detailed her agency’s efforts to aid flood victims. Since the disaster began, NEMA has been providing shelters and mobile water purifiers to ensure access to clean drinking water.

Governor Zulum also acknowledged the contributions from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, NEMA, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), which have been instrumental in supporting the flood victims.

The event was attended by Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, members of the House of Representatives, and the Borno State Executive Council.
