Fans of Manchester United have raised concerns over a controversial moment involving Lisandro Martinez during Monday night’s clash.
United were already trailing 2-0 at half-time, with Noah Okafor scoring twice, when the situation worsened early in the second half. Martinez was shown a straight red card in the 56th minute after a VAR review determined he had pulled the hair of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Referee Paul Tierney consulted the pitchside monitor before dismissing the Argentine defender for violent conduct.
Although hair-pulling is considered a red-card offence, many United supporters questioned the decision after noticing that, during the same incident, Calvert-Lewin appeared to have his hand on Martinez’s throat.
The perceived oversight sparked strong reactions among fans, who argued that both actions should have been reviewed equally.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, United managed to pull a goal back through Casemiro, who headed home from a cross by Bruno Fernandes.
Martinez is now expected to serve a three-match suspension, ruling him out of key fixtures against Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC, as well as a match against Brentford FC.
