    Lagos State Government prosecutes 229 hoodlums

    The Lagos state government has initiated the prosecution of 229 hoodlums over the destruction and looting of public and private property in different parts of the state. 

    In a statement released by the state government, the hoodlums were accused of taking advantage of the #EndSARS protest to carry out the attacks. 

    Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN) who made the announcement today October 24 said the State Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs. Olayinka Adeyemi has gone round relevant Police formations with a team of Prosecutors to evaluate files of those arrested by the police with a view to determining those that have prima facie case made against them.
     

    Onigbanjo said; 

    “229 suspects were arrested by the Police for various criminal offenses ranging from arson, murder, stealing, malicious damage of property and assault before and after the Statewide curfew imposed by the Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to restore law and order in Lagos”

    He further averred that after the conclusion of the evaluation exercise, those who have cases to answer will be arraigned before the courts on Monday October 26, while others will be released.

    Troops eliminate Terrorists, destroy gun trucks, recover arms

    The troops of Operation Fire Ball have inflicted heavy casualty on Boko Haram/Islamic States for West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists killing 16 in recent encounters in North East theatre of operation.

    The Acting Director, Defence Media Operations, Brig.-Gen. Bernard Onyeuko, in a statement on Sunday, said that operation was a subsidiary operation launched under Operation Lafiya Dole to route out remnant of terrorists.

    Onyeuko said that four terrorists’ gun trucks were destroyed as well as recovery of large cache of arms and ammunitions during the various encounters.

    He disclosed that the troops had on Oct. 21 noticed unusual vehicles tailing the convoy of vehicles conveying Internally Displaced Persons from Maiduguri Cosmopolitan City to Baga town in order to infiltrate their position.

    According to him, the troops inflicted heavy casualty on them by killing three terrorists and destroyed one Gun Truck.

    He added that one Anti Aircraft Gun, three AK47 Rifle, three Shells for making Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs) were also captured, adding that the troops had since dominated the area with aggressive patrols.

    Onyeuko also disclosed that troops of Army Super Camp Magumeri also killed 11 in a fierce encounter and captured three gun trucks with three Anti Aircraft guns and one Dushka gun.

    He said the troops of Army Super Camp located at Mallam Fatori also routed elements of Boko Haram/ ISWAP terrorists who attacked their location on Saturday.

    According to him, after the fierce battle two terrorists were neutralised while others escaped with gunshot wounds as traces of blood of dragged casualties by the criminals were seen during exploitation.

    “The troops captured three AK47 rifles, one Light Machine Gun, 466 Rounds of 7.62x54mm ammunition, 24 rounds of 7.62x51mm ammunition and One Tecno cell phone.

    He said that the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole are in high spirit and dominating their Area of Responsibilities with robust fighting patrols.

    “The troops are hereby commended for the resilience, doggedness and commitment exhibited during the above encounters. They are equally encouraged not to rest on their oars but build on the successes recorded.

    “The entire populace of the North East zone are hereby assured of the determination of the High Command of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to finally rout out the remnants of the BHT/ISWAP criminals from their enclaves,” he said.

    Police kill 6 suspected terrorists in Yobe

    The Police Command in Yobe on Sunday said that its personnel had killed six suspected Boko Haram terrorists who earlier attacked Babbangida town in Tarmuwa Local Government Area of the state.

    The Spokesman of the command, ASP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed this in an interview with in Damaturu.

    Abdulkarim said the six suspected terrorists were shot dead by mobile police personnel protecting the division.

    “Our mobile police personnel held their ground and exchanged gun fire with the terrorists, killing six of them while many others fled with gunshot wounds.

    “The terrorists torched a vigilance group vehicle, they also destroyed part of the council secretariat, divisional police station and a military base before they were repelled,” he said.

    He said a policeman was killed and another injured during the gun battle.

    Reports had it that a terrorist attack on Babangida town that occurred on Saturday evening led to the destruction of some government assets, causing panic among the residents.

    Prison breaks : Nigerian Correctional Service to publish names and photos of over 1500 escaped inmates

    The Nigerian Correctional Service says it will be releasing the names and photographs of over 1,500 inmates who escaped from the custodial facilities in Benin and Oko, Edo State, and in Okitipupa, Ondo State, on Monday Octoober 26, and Thursday October 29, respectively.

    Following the crisis that has rocked the nation after hoodlums hijacked the End SARS protests, several prisons were attacked and the prisoners were let out of the facilities.

    Giving an update on efforts to recapture the prisoners, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Correctional  Service, Austin Njoku, said the service was equally mobilising various security and intelligence resources to recapture the fleeing inmates. While 1,993 inmates broke out of the two custodial centres in Edo State, 58 reportedly escaped from the Ondo correctional facility.

    Speaking to newsmen, Njoku said

    “We are mobilising the people and the press for information because to inject the number of such people into society is a problem. Imagine over 1,000 criminals injected into society? We are mobilising the intelligence agencies, the police and the DSS (Department of State Services). We are publishing their names and pictures very soon.”

    Meanwhile, 25 inmates who escaped from Oko and Sapele Road Correctional Centre when hoodlums broke into the facilities have voluntarily returned to the centres and surrendered themselves to the authorities.

    Kaduna Govt. extends curfew to cover the whole state

    Hours after announcing the imposition of curfew in some parts of two local government areas, the Kaduna State Government has extended the 24-hour curfew to cover the whole state.

    Samuel Aruwan, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, said in a statement issued in Kaduna on Saturday that the decision was to safeguard lives and properties.

    “This measure is taken to help safeguard our communities, protect lives and property and contain criminal elements who are looting public and private assets.

    “The extension of the 24-hour curfew to all the 23 local government areas of the state is effective immediately.

    “KDSG will keep the situation under review and regrets the inconvenience it may cause to law-abiding citizens.

    “The state government wishes to appeal to all residents of the state to kindly bear with the government as it takes necessary action to maintain law and order, and protect the right of citizens to live in peace,” he stated.

    Seven people have been arrested in connection to the invasion of Senator Teslim Folarin’s home in Oluyole area of Ibadan, Oyo state’s capital. 

    LIB reported earlier that some hoodlums invaded the Senator’s home and carted away brand new motorcycles. 

    Serving an update, the lawmaker’s elder brother Yinka Folarin told newsmen that the suspects were arrested at the residence of the lawmaker by the Oyo State joint security task force ‘Operation Burst’.

    He further revealed that the looted items were meant for the 11 local government areas constituting Oyo Central Senatorial District.

    Alpha Conde wins third term in office in controversial Guinean presidential election

    President  Alpha Conde has secured a third term in office by winning Guinea’s controversial presidential election with 59.5 percent of the vote. 

    The electoral authority president Kabinet Cisse said Conde’s main opponent Cellou Dalein Diallo polled 33.5 percent of the vote.

    The announcement on Saturday October 24, came after days of deadly violence in the wake of the October 18 vote. While the opposition said 27 people have been killed, officials have put the death toll at about 10.

    Doubting the independence of the electoral authority, Diallo had on Monday October 19 declared himself victorious before the results were announced. This triggered confrontations between his supporters and security forces.

    In an interview with DW’s French for Africa Service, Alpha Souleymane Ba Fisher a lawmaker from the ruling RPG party, accused opposition candidate Cellou Dalein Diallo of stoking unnecessary political tension.

    Fisher said; 

    “He invited his activists to take to the streets and attack people so that the country would fall into chaos.”

    In 2010, Conde became Guinea’s first democratically elected leader after decades of military rule. He was re-elected in 2015. Before becoming President, Conde had been a long-standing opposition figure who was jailed and exiled for his views against Guinea’s military government.

    Diallo on the other hand, is a former prime minister who also finished runner-up to Conde in the 2010 and 2015 elections.

    #EndSARS: FG To Set Up N25bn Youth Fund, As Kaduna Holds Stakeholders Meeting

    The Federal government says it has created a youth fund of N25 billion as part of efforts to address the ongoing #EndSARS protests and youth restiveness in the country.

    The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed disclosed this during a stakeholders meeting with the Deputy Governor of Kaduna State on Saturday, in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to state governors and ministers to dialogue with stakeholders with the view to finding solutions to the End SARS protests.

    While explaining that the youth fund will be increased to N75bn within a period of three years, the minister says the aim is to support youths to actualize their innovative and entrepreneurial ideas they have for them to grow their own businesses and be independent.

    On her part, the Kaduna Deputy Governor, says the meeting is aimed at brainstorming towards tackling security challenges occasioned by the activities of the END SARS protesters.

    She, however, commended the citizens of the state especially the youths for maintaining the peace in the face of ongoing violent protests in some parts of the country.

    The minister of Environment, Dr Mohammed Abubakar who attended the meeting, also explains that the federal government is committed to peoples friendly reforms that will create more jobs for the youths.

    #EndSARS: Gov Hope Uzodimma Approves Release Of N2bn For Youth Empowerment

    Imo state Governor, Hope Uzodimma has approved the immediate release of a takeoff fund of two billion naira out of the six billion naira earmarked for an accelerated youth empowerment programme.

    The Governor disclosed this in a statewide broadcast in Owerri the Imo state capital on Saturday.

    Governor Uzodinma said the two billion naira will be deployed for the training of the first batch of beneficiaries of the scheme known as the Imo State Special Youth Empowerment and Intervention Programme which will commence next week.

    He added that an estimated number of 500,000 Imo youths in different skills acquisition will be given start-up capital.

    While also assuring Imo indigenes that the security operatives are on the trail of those that masterminded the carnage and destruction of properties in the state, he noted that the 24 hours curfew earlier imposed in all parts of the state has been reviewed.

    Gov. Uzodimma relaxes curfew from 6pm-6am

    Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, on Saturday relaxed the 24 hours curfew imposed on the state following the wanton destruction unleashed in some parts of the state during #Endsars protest across the country.

    The governor who announced this during a state broadcast on Saturday, said as the situation in the state and the country gradually returns to normal, “it is necessary to relax the curfew announced on Wednesday.”

    Consequently, he said the curfew will now start from 6pm to 6am everyday for now, adding that those on approved essential services are however exempted from the curfew.

    He commended the youths across the country in general and in Imo State in particular for heeding to President Muhammadu Buhari and his calls to end the protests.

    He also lauded the youths from across the country in general for conducting themselves responsibly during the #EndSARS protests by pulling out after making their grievances known, noting that the unfortunate destruction of government facilities and private property in Imo in the guise of protests afterwards was the handiwork of mercenaries hired to wreak havoc in the state.

    Governor Uzodimma also announced the immediate release of N2 billion as take-off fund for the training of the first batch of the beneficiaries of a comprehensive youth empowerment scheme in the state.

    The money will be taken out of the N6 billion the government has earmarked for an accelerated youth empowerment programme in Imo.

    “I am glad to announce to you therefore that my government has approved an immediate release of a take-off fund of N2,000,000,000.00 (Two Billion Naira) out of N6,000,000,000 (Six Billion Naira) earmarked for an accelerated youth empowerment programme.

    “The N2,000,000,000.00 (Two Billion Naira) take off fund will be deployed for the training of the first batch of the beneficiaries of this scheme which will commerce next week,” the governor explained.

    The empowerment programme, the governor said, is targeted at an estimated 500,000 Imo youths to be trained in the 1st, 2nd & 3rd batches in different skills acquisition programmes within the next two years, including providing them with start-up capital to begin their own enterprises.

    “The training will come under the Imo State Special Youth Empowerment and Intervention Programme (IMYEIP) and to be overseen by the State’s Ministry of Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship.”
