FENRAD demands end to extortion by security agents

    By Okechukwu Keshi Ukegbu

Amid the end of SARS and police brutality protests raging across the country, Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD) has demanded an end to all forms of extortion by security agents especially in the South East zone.
The group said that the proliferation of check points in the zone with particular reference to Abia State by both the police and army has subjected road users, especially motorists to untold hardship.
A statement endorsed by the group’s Executive Director, Comrade Nnanna Nelson Nwafor reads:” The current agitations to end the impunity by the recently disbanded police unit, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) is long over due.
“Our position is that since we have have risen to the occasion to address abuses meted on Nigerians by security agents, we believe it should be holistic.
“FENRAD is worried over  the operations of our security agents, and this is the high extortion of Nigerians induced by our security agents on our highways”.
FENRAD further explained that these extortions are not only perpetrated by the police but soldiers who have abandoned their primary responsibility of defending the nation against external aggression but have converted our major highways to toll collection points.
According to the group, the soldiers mount young men who serve as collection agents few meters from their check points to collect toll for them.
“On our Spot Assessment investigation in some checkpoints in Abia state which include Owerrinta, Umuikaa, Ntigha. and Akara checkpoints we discovered high extortion of road users by security agents manning these checkpoints”.
The group explained that the extortion activities result to traffic challenges as these security agents harass and intimate road users on refusal to part with some toll.
FENRAD is demanding that the hierarchies of these security agencies end this ugly trend lest it snowballs to another round of protests tagged “#EndExtortionsbysecurityagencies
The group is also worries that the extortion is extended to tricycle operators in Aba by policemen, adding that if all entreaties to end this ugly trend fails, it will not hesitate to deploy legal actions to address it.

#EndSARS protesters demands are impossible to meet – Miyetti Allah

The Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore has appealed to the EndSARS protesters to suspend the protest and wait for the Federal Government to implement their demands.

The National President of the association, Malam Bello Abdullahi, made the appeal at a news conference in Abuja on Monday.

He said that it was unacceptable for the protesters to resort to blocking of roads, thereby denying other citizens the right to use the roads.

According to him, this is an attempt to ground the country and create more suffering in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic.

“For weeks now citizens, especially our youths have taken to the streets to demand an end to SARS/Police brutality and also requesting for a reform of the Nigerian Police Force.

” Thankfully, these demands have been received by the Federal Government, which has ordered arrest and persecution of those police officers involved in extra-judicial killings of citizens.

” And since the Federal Government has heard and accepted the issues raised by the protesters, it is only wise for the protesters to stop as government needs time to implement their demands.

” The protests have yielded the desired results with the government accepting their genuine demands and working to address all of them.”

Abdullai said that for the first time, Nigerian citizens came out to demand for justice in which the government responded positively.

” The insistence to continue to protest even when government has made concessions is wrong. The open defiance is reckless, provocative. Denial of access to means of livelihood can lead to fracas and conflict.

“The demands of the protesters are nebulous, inconsistent, haphazard, whimsical, and impossible to meet,” he said.

The Miyetti Allah leader commended the maturity and professionalism of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, in spite of the violent nature of the protesters.

The IGP’s consistent warning to police officers and their commander against the use of force on protesters, is indeed commendable and has clearly shown that police reform is already taking place.

‘’While, it is citizens fundamental rights of freedoms of expression, assembly and movement, Miyetti Allah is again alerting the public, that desperate politicians have hijacked the protest for personal selfish reason.

‘’This must not be allowed to continue,” Abdullahi said

2023: Join APC –Ohanaeze Ndigbo begs South-East Govs

In its continued agitation for a Nigeria President of Igbo extraction in 2023, the Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, OYC, has called on governors from the South-East geopolitical zone to join the governing All Progressives Congress(APC) in the interest of the people.

Ohanaeze hinted that there are no political benefits for the South East zone to remain in a political party that has no respect and value for the Igbos except milking their votes during elections through deceitful mediums and fake promises.

The call was contained in a press statement signed by OYC President, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Secretary-General, Okwu Nnabuike and made available to newsmen on Monday.

Ohanaeze youths further urged the South-East governors to save the political future of the Igbo nation and collapse three states into the All Progressives Congress(APC) before the party’s National convention to control their state structures.

The body said the development would serve as sanctions for the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to reverse their decision for an open presidential contest to zoning formula, as enshrined in its constitution.

According to the OYC statement, “Historically, Igbos had never remained in the opposition party since 1960. Igbos deserves better deals, and only through active roles in the mainstream political party will there be an increase in dividends of democracy and projects in the Southeast zone.

The continuous exclusion of the South-East zone from the federal government’s crucial political appointments and landmark projects are attributed to Igbo’s absence in mainstream governance. Igbo youths want these unpleasant situations to end, and OYC urges South-East governors to embrace APC and decamp without further delay.
