15 NYSC members to repeat service, 26 get extensions in Ekiti
Fifteen Corps Members of 2019 Batch B Stream ‘1’ who served in Ekiti would have their compulsory one year service repeated, while 26 bagged various extensions.The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ekiti Coordinator, Mrs Emmanuella Okpongete made the disclosure on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti during the passing-out of 2019 Batch B Stream 1.NAN reported that the state coordinator gave the breakdown at the ceremony held at the Ekiti Parapo Pavillion, Ado-Ekiti, without the usual ceremony.According to Okpongete, those who are to repeat the service year absconded from their primary assignments.“The punishment for their offence is to repeat their service year and refund whatever allowance(s) they might have collected.“Today, we are having the passing-out of the 2019 Batch B Stream 1. This set of corps members are unique in different ways.” Out of 2,282 Corps members, 15 absconded and will have their service year repeated, 26 got extension for various offences and three outstanding ones that have done well are recommended for State Awards” 16 corps members got Commendation Letters for their outstanding work in their primary places of assignment, we however, lost one to ruptured Appendix,” Okpongete said.On measure to ensure that social and physical distancing was maintained during the issurance of certificates, the NYSC state coordinator said they designed it in a way that not more than 20 corps members attended at once.She said,” We asked corps members to come at certain time. We ensure we do not have more than 20 to take certificates at once.” We asked them to come with their own face masks, while we provided soaps and water to prevent the spread of COVID-19.She, however, thanked Ekiti Government for being supportive at all time, while urging corps members not to allow the prevalence of the Coronavirus to deter them from putting into positive use the skills acquired.In a separate interviews, Lateef Tajudeen and Edith Oarhe thanked Almighty God for the successful service year.Oarhe said,” Though my first challenge when I came to Ekiti was language barrier, but I was able to adapt; I have learnt a lot from different people and background.”
Lagos Govt targets 150 technology solutions in 2021
The Lagos State Government, through its Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), says it is targeting 150 technological applications/solutions in 2021.
The Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr Hakeem Fahm, made this known on Thursday at the 2020 Ministerial Press Briefing, commemorating the One Year in Office of the Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration.
Falm said that within the first year administration of Sanwo-Olu, the ministry received over 60 technological applications/solutions from the Lagos Solution Hub.
He said that the state government was evaluating the applications to ensure that they were of international standards and could solve local problems.
According to him, the Lagos Solution Hub is established to serve as an interface between the solution ecosystem and Lagos State.
”The hub accept innovative proposals and applications to help drive problem solving in the state, reduce application bottlenecks and enhance communication between state and private sector problem solvers,” he said.
The commissioner said that through the hub, government effectively communicated its requirements for projects to application developers.
Falm said that Lagos State was fully committed to deploying technologies in driving the economy.
He said that through the Lagos State Science Research and Innovation Council, the state government identified creative and innovative ways to re-engineer the economy across education, business and government environment.
According to him, the Council has its working documents that focus on using Science, Technology and Innovation to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He said that the council was to promote scientific research and innovation activities in the public and private institutions, by identifying all research and innovation products that were viable and translate such to commercial activities with a view to establishing small/medium scale industries.
Falm said that the council managed the Science Research and Innovation Fund, of which N250 million had been set aside as seed fund to encourage Science, Research and Innovation drives in the state.

Military tracking movement of fleeing bandits –Enenche
The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, has assured that the military high command had put measures in place to checkmate inter-state movement of fleeing armed bandits from the heat of military operations in the North West.
Enenche stated this while giving update on the military operations across the country at a news conference on Thursday in Abuja.
He said that following the intensified offensive and military onslaught against armed bandits in the North west and North Central parts of the country, there were concerns that the bandits could move to other states.
According to him, the military High Command has assured that this concerns should not bring panick to the public as the military is on top of the game.
Enenche explained that all current operations were in synergy with the ongoing operations in the North West to tackle interstate movement of armed bandits and other criminals within the zones.
He added that air assets had been deployed to cover Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa and Kogi states in this regard.
“I am to affirm that, the Armed Forces of Nigeria is totally committed to tackling all the security challenges in the country until normalcy is restored.
“Hence, the public is requested to continue to provide credible information to the Nigerian Military,” he said.

Evacuation: FG to prioritise Nigerians in China
The Federal Government has said it would give priority to evacuees in China when evacuation flights eventually resume, Daybreak reports.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, disclosed this on Wednesday during a briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja.
He said the government was aware of the harsh climate against nationals in China, noting that they would be repatriated as soon as new modalities were put in place.
He said, “We are very hopeful that maybe by next week, we should be able to commence evacuation. There is a large number of Nigerians still wanting to be evacuated. In addition to the UK, there are Nigerians in China, this is something we are not happy about.
“It is a real priority for us to bring all the evacuees back home but we know those in China are facing very essential challenges and as soon this mechanism is put in place, I’d like to assure them that we’ll do everything possible to prioritise their return.
“In regards to compensation to Nigerians who were caught up in the crisis in Guangzhou, China due to the discrimination on the basis of nationality and race, I spoke to the Consular General in Guangzhou who was in direct contact with the Nigerians there to provide details of any loss they may have suffered. We will now engage on that basis, with the Chinese Government.
“When I summoned the Chinese Ambassador, Mr Zhou Pingjian, he also made these commitments, that they will be very interested to receive the details of any complaints or loss, and I must say to date that nothing has come in formally from our Consulate in Guangzhou.”

COVID-19: Kogi rejects NCDC result, insists state still free
The Kogi State Government has rejected the two index cases reported by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Daybreak reports.
The State commissioner for health, Dr. Saka Haruna Audu, in a press statement on Wednesday described the claim as a fallacy.
He said, “Kogi State till this very moment is Covid-19 free. We have developed full testing capacity and have conducted hundreds of tests so far which have returned negative.
“We have also continued to insist that we will not be a party to any fictitious Covid-19 claims which is why we do not recognise any Covid-19 test conducted by any Kogite outside the boundaries of the State except those initiated by us.
“Any attempt to force us to announce a case of Covid-19 will be vehemently rejected.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Wednesday alleged that two index cases were recorded in Kogi bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 8733.

Oyo Assembly confirms Aderemi as President of Customary Court of Appeal
The Oyo State House of Assembly on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Justice Adekemi Aderemi as the President of the Customary Court of Appeal.
Speaking at plenary, the Speaker, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin,urged Aderemi to fully utilise her position in making the judiciary better.
Ogundoyin also urged Aderemi to look into the backlog of cases pending in the court.

According to her, a lot of work remains to be done in the state’s judiciary.
“In terms of our job, we will definitely work very hard because where I am coming from, we work hard.
” Presently we have a whole load of cases to work on.
“We will even assist the High Court to continue to reduce the work load that is presently on ground,” she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Aderemi was born on Jan. 4, 1956.

COVID-19: Niger extends lockdown by two weeks
Governor Abubakar Bello of Niger State on Thursday extended the COVID-19 Preventive, Containment and Emergency Order in state by two weeks from Wednesday.
The Secretary to the State Government and Chairman, Niger State Task Force on Covid-19 Pandemic, Ahmed Matane, made this known in a statement.
Bello said the extension of the lockdown was as a result of the increase in the confirmed cases of coronavirus in the state.
The governor urged residents to adhere strictly to the safety protocols such as mandatory wearing of face masks in public places and observance of social distancing.
Others are regular handwashing with soap under running water, application of hand sanitisers and staying at home as advised by health workers.
Bello also warned that there should be no human and vehicular movements during the lockdown days, except those on essential duties.
He said the three days window period of Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays remain.
The governor said movement within border areas remain restricted and government would continue to monitor situation at the border zones.
“Public and Private Schools as well as Tertiary Institutions remain closed while social activities that involve more than twenty people stand prohibited,” Bello said.
He said the operations of commercial motorcycles popularly known as Okada remain banned while other commercial vehicles are to abide by the Ministry of Transport guidelines.
The governor urged residents to support his administration’s good intentions of keeping everyone safe from the dreaded disease.
Bello warned that anyone who failed to comply with the requirement imposed under the COVID-19 Order would be liable to a fine or imprisonment or both in accordance with the extant laws.

Insecurity: Nigerian military raises alarm over interstate movement of bandits
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has raised the alarm over alleged interstate movement of bandits.
Major General John Enenche, the Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, made this known in a statement on Thursday.
According to Enenche, there are worries from some quarters in the North West and North Central parts of Nigeria that armed bandits could escape from states where the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies are conducting various operations at the moment, to other states.

We won’t hoist Biafra flag – BNYL
Biafra Nations Youth League, BNYL, on Thursday said it will not hoist Biafra flags on 30th May to mark the Biafra Day celebration.
BNYL Deputy National Leader, Ebuta Takon Akor made the disclosure in a statement he signed and sent to Daybreak
May 30th is a day set aside annually to commemorate those who died during the Biafra civil war.
However, Akor lamented the continuous lockdown which he said has “become a barrier to this year’s Biafra Day” celebration.
According to Akor, “There is no plan to hoist Biafra flag” during this year’s Biafra Day celebration.”
He urged members and supporters of the group to pray for departed heroes of Biafra war on Saturday.
The group also disassociated its members from the Biafra parliament inaugurated in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States by the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB.
BNYL described it as invalid, adding that it was “wrong to have a parliament in an existing parliament.”
Akor stated that pro-Biafrans are expected to come together and sack members of the parliament using their voting strength and replace them with Biafra friendly legislatures “whereby they refused to pass bill on Biafra’s right to leave, we will revolt against them in all ramifications”.
He also advised the MASSOB leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike to limit his struggle to the title of ” Eze Ndigbo” and stop creating confusion outside Igbo land.
Ebuta stated that anybody who goes with the title of “Eze Ndigbo”, ” Obong Efik”, “Amanyanabo Ijaw” is not a national leader and should focus on his subjects.

Dapo Abiodun is disciplined – Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday celebrated Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on his 60th birthday.
The President, in a statement by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, hailed Abiodun’s “discipline”.
Buhari joined the Ogun State Executive Council, members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and citizens of the state in celebrating the governor.
He also congratulated the family, supporters and political associates.
Buhari noted that Abiodun’s landmark age, “has been heralded by many lofty achievements in the private sector and public service, attracting recognition at home and abroad, especially in contributing to his state and national development”.
The Nigerian leader commended, “the governor’s discipline, diligence and courage, which graciously translated into winning the 2019 elections”.
He further hailed Abiodun on the steps taken in prioritizing education and health care, and providing infrastructure that will stimulate more economic activities and reduce poverty.
The statement added that the President believes his wealth of experience in providing leadership, and a strong network in the business community will be gainfully used for the betterment of the state.
Buhari urged Abiodun to remain steadfast and focused in improving the lives of the people and taking the state to greater heights.
He prayed that the almighty God will endow the governor with abundant health and wisdom to realize his dreams.
