BREAKING: Ex-NWC Member Lukman Resigns from APC

Salihu Lukman, former National Vice Chairman (North West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has resigned from the ruling party. Lukman announced his resignation in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, titled “APC and The Future of Nigerian Democracy: Letter to Selected APC Leaders.”

Lukman cited a lack of internal democracy and the party leadership’s failure to implement necessary reforms as reasons for his departure. He stated that he is returning to grassroots activism to work with committed Nigerians dedicated to the survival and development of democracy in the country.

He explained, “Given all this, it is possible to remain in APC if at all President Tinubu will allow internal reform in the party to return it to its founding vision, which as it is, is very remote. But my reality now in the party is that my membership has been rendered useless, and there is no need for me to continue to impose myself.

“I have therefore gone back to the trenches and will try to work with all committed Nigerians who agree and subscribe to the goal of actively campaigning for the survival and development of democracy in Nigeria.”

Lukman did not disclose which party he will join ahead of the 2027 elections, but he emphasized the importance of strong democracy and functional political parties in Nigeria.

He added, “We must grow our democracy to the point whereby elected representatives at all levels are accountable to the party and it is possible for Nigerians represented by various interests to develop strong relationships with political parties and elected governments based on which policies of governments can be made to reflect wider interests of Nigerians.

“I am confident that a strong democracy with functional political parties is possible in Nigeria. I am also confident that in our lifetime, we can produce governments that are truly capable of making the lives of Nigerians better. I don’t expect party leaders will agree with my decision. I believe that eventually, we will be united with all party leaders and other Nigerians who are committed to developing Nigerian democracy.”

  • Akpabio Denies 2027 Presidential Ambitions Amid Poster Controversy

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has refuted claims that he intends to contest the 2027 presidential election alongside former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. Reports surfaced after posters promoting their candidacy appeared in parts of Abuja.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio dismissed the posters as the work of mischief makers. He emphasized that his current focus is on supporting President Bola Tinubu through legislative collaboration.

“The attention of the office of the President of the Senate has been drawn to posters circulating in some parts of Kaduna associating the President of the Senate with a supposed El-Rufai 2027 political ambition. This is the handiwork of mischief makers and familiar fifth columnists,” the statement read.

Akpabio clarified that he has no interest in running for president and urged security agencies to investigate the matter. He described the posters as an attempt to create division among the president’s loyalists.

“Senator Akpabio is presently preoccupied with the responsibility of collaborating and providing the required legislative support to President Bola Tinubu to reset Nigeria and make the nation regain its pride of place in the comity of nations,” Eyiboh stated.

The statement underscored that Akpabio has been focused on his duties as the Chairman of the National Assembly since June 13, 2023, and has not contemplated a presidential run.

“We implore members of the public to disregard this unbridled mischief intended to distract Nigerians from the purposeful and positive interventions the Senate under the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio is demonstrating,” the statement concluded.

  • Nigeria Needs to Cut the Cost of Democracy, Says Obanikoro

Nigeria Needs to Cut the Cost of Democracy, Says Obanikoro

Former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has called for a review of the budget allocated to the Senate and House of Representatives to reduce the high cost of governance. Speaking on Nigeria’s Democracy Day, Obanikoro stressed the need for greater transparency in the National Assembly’s budget.

“Democracy has become expensive because we have made it so. In the United States, for example, lawmakers are not provided with accommodation and live on their salary and minimal fringe benefits. Democracy doesn’t have to be this costly,” Obanikoro explained.

He argued that transparency in the legislative budget could mitigate the recent calls for a parliamentary system of government. “If the budget is transparent and citizens can see allocations for each member of the National Assembly online, and contribute to the process, it will make the institution less expensive,” he stated.

Obanikoro suggested that reducing the National Assembly’s budget could address concerns about the bicameral system. “If we cut the budget to a reasonable level, many Nigerians would find it acceptable. There are budgetary provisions that should not exist, and we must be courageous enough to eliminate them,” he added.

  • Why is Governor Alia prioritizing salaries, pensions, and infrastructure over political allies?

Why is Governor Alia prioritizing salaries, pensions, and infrastructure over political allies?

    By Sylvester T. Kurga

    Reverend Father Hyacinth Iormem Alia contested for the governorship of Benue State in the 2023 elections under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and won. He was sworn-in on the 29th may, 2023. At his inaugural and even during electioneering campaigns he made promises to the people of Benue state. Some of them were;

Payment of staff salaries and pensions of retired civil servants.
Massive infrastructural development to enhance economic development of the state.
Aggressive urban and rural development programmes
Pro-poor programmes to help the poor and the disadvantaged groups to live a happy life.
Prioritizing health and education sectors both at primary and tertiary levels, to mention but a few. He finally invited the people of Benue state especially his political associates of all classes to team up with him in realizing the set objectives.

    It is exactly one year since the governor assumed office and he has kept to his promise in doing the following;

    Payment of salaries and pensions.

    Governor Alia is paying workers salaries and pensions of retired civil servants in a manner that has thrown everybody into a state of awe and trepidation as no civilian government in the state ever gave priority attention to this matter but rather they treated it with reckless abandon. But why has he chosen to prioritize wage and pension payment? Two reasons;

As a Rev. Father and lover of humanity, believer in God and his injunctions as exemplified in the Bible, vide Romans 4:4 “now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. David celebrates the same truth”. –NKJV.
Payment of salaries and pensions is a judicious implementation of contract agreement entered into between the employer (government) and employee (worker) recognized by the constitution of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) and the various Acts and Laws of parliament. It is therefore preposterous, mischievous and diabolical for any person, group of persons to question Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, a law-abiding and God fearing governor, observing the laws of God and the state over his prioritization of payment of salaries and pensions. The common refrain from the detractors has been thus: “Is that all he came to do as the governor”? Those who deliberately denied the workers and pensioners of their hard earned wages have woes awaiting them and this; God has spoken in James 5:4 “look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who moved your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty”. NKJV.
The third category of those being remunerated by the Benue State government are those politicians holding elective positions and those appointed by the Governor. Needless to say that their pay packages are all covered by laws made by National and State Assemblies, the R.M.A.F.C Act has empowered the commission to fix the pay packages in this regard. Here too, the governor hat not transgressed the laws by making payments to political office holders.
The governor’s engagement in critical physical infrastructures and other sectors of the economy.
The Makurdi and Gboko underpass or flyovers. These are undertaken to decongest urban traffic, prevent or minimize fatal accidents, and beautify the cities where they are situated. It is understood that one is soon to be done in Otukpo. For supporters of positive change and modernization, the construction of these monuments is very necessary, timely and overdue as Benue State capital and other cities cannot continue to look like a medieval city years after the state was created. Detractors have again dismissed these as wasteful of resources and misplaced priorities. They have again resorted to their usual refrain ‘’ Na flyover we go chop”?
    Rural and Urban Roads

In less than a year the governor has started and completed or is about to complete urban and rural roads, (these are verifiable) in Makurdi, Vandeikya etc. the importance of these can’t be over emphasized. Years after Makurdi was made the Benue state capital many township roads have remain impassable. The way the governor has started, if God permit, 80% of streets in Makurdi will be well paved before his four year tenure ends. While many people are happy with the development in this sub-sector detractors have again resorted to the usual refrain “Na roads we go chop”?

    Transport sub-sector

The removal of fuel subsidy on petrol by the Federal Government brought sufferings of immeasurable proportion to all citizens in Nigeria. The Federal Government assisted States with funds to undertake measures that can help the masses to meet their travelling needs. Busses were purchased for the new look Benue States transport company the Benue links. Transport fares have been subsidies by the governor to affordable rates. Many people are happy. Detractors have since said that the busses purchased are old and unserviceable, even though on daily basis the busses commute roads in the state and beyond. What is very important about the action taken by the governor is that from the underpass, urban and rural roads, transport, employment of staff and upgrading of health care system is covered by the appropriation laws of Benue state. That is to say that money spent on the projects are budgeted funds and each project has heads and sub-heads of the State budget. For the time being, I am unable to see any evidence of misappropriation or even misapplication of funds by the Governor.  It may seem that   the Governor’s critics largely, but not restricted to his immediate party constituency, the APC are doing so not because the Governor has committed any infraction in the course of governance or that the projects are not impactful, rather the criticisms stem from what is perceived as the governor’s tightfistedness and his inability to “service “compensate or settle elders, stake holders or those who helped him to become the Governor of Benue State. If truly this is the reason for these criticisms, then too bad.

How can the elders, stakeholders’ professional politicians and benefactors benefit from Governor Alia and the Alia’s administration?

If I were an American, a Briton, Australian or even our next door neighbor, Benin Republic, my answer to this would have been swift, absolute, unequivocal and direct. That is, that they can benefit from Alia’s good governance like all other Benue citizens. But as Nigerian, I know as a matter of fact that the expected benefits of those who profess to be professional politicians go beyond mere enjoyment of social goods provided by government and cover things such as gifts in cash, vehicles, animals, landed property, respect and recognition, attention and un-hindered access to the chief executive and in some cases the claims of ownership of the chief executive which renders such an answer rather injurious to some politicians. This matter has a history and background that date back to the first Republic and become progressively entrenched as a norm in the other republics. But then is there anything like professional politicians? The Webster’s dictionary of the English language, international edition has defined profession as one of a limited number of occupations or vocation involving especially the learned professions: law, medicine and the church. Elsewhere, too, the wiktionary has defined profession as declaration of faith, promise or vow made on entering a religious order. Occupational profession has been defined by the same source as occupation, trade craft, in which one has a professed expertise in a particular area, a job especially one requiring high level skills or trading, doctors, lawyers, engineers. The public service for example has a plethora of professionals paid on the basis of their professions. Politics should be seen as hobby as it is regarded in other climes and not a profession as we look at it here. It is not a paid profession, as being regarded here.

But must governor alia listen to elders? Yes. Must he take advice from party elders? Yes, advice that he regard as beneficial to the Benue people. Must he compensate those who assisted him to become the governor of Benue state? Yes.

As an elder and APC member that I am, who played a part to ensure that Alia emerge victorious, I will be very glad to be compensated. So who determines the manner and mode of compensation? The governor of course. This is the stage where we need to understand the psychology of the governor and his economic style of governance. Governor Alia’s psychology is discernable from his actions, utterances and body language. He has brought change in the way people were compensated in the past which was characterized by gifts that benefited very few individuals. I call that change Alianomics in which people should be patronized with legally budgeted items of development which in the end benefit the entire community. Now let me ask a simple question. Can those criticizing the governor show any evidence that they made a request to the governor for development projects to be sited in their community and the requests turned down by the governor? From the actions, utterances and the body language of the governor he is only averse to spending money which is not explainable and so to many, Alianomics as an economic paradigm is not only too sudden, harsh but hateful. This is the crux of the matter.

Governor Alia is not the only governor that has found himself in this political quagmire accentuated by those who depend on government money for survival, such people have often resorted to blackmail, vituperations and diatribe so as to cow a chief executive of the state to capitulate and derail on a positive chosen path to development .

Recall that, in the inauguration speech of the former Governor of Benue State, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Suswam, he stated inter-alia that…………….. “In accepting your mandate here today, I pledge before you, before my creator, the only living God I serve, that I desire to give my people no cause what so ever to regret. I desire and pray the Almighty God to make me surpass the achievements of my fore bearers who have brought us this far” was he allowed to maximized the desire? No sooner had he started his rural development projects across the state than the backward looking persons did all they could to thwart his efforts. He would later reflect on this matter with high sense of disappointment especially with these who saw nothing good during his tenure in so far as their personal interests were not achieved. In the interview he granted Arise TV some months ago he stated that he was inundated with the usual refrain, “Na projects we go chop” during his tenure as governor of Benue State. What does this portray?

Those endowed with foresight ought to know that living on what is not yours is very transient and when undue reliance is placed on ones benevolence and is suddenly withdrawn, frustration and anger sets in. this is the scenario at play in Benue State today. Paradoxically a typical Nigerian politician is very resilient and enduring type, surviving decades of military rule when there was zero political activity. I urge all to live with the reality of the situation , turn to alternative areas where you can best utilize your aptitude for survival.

Alianomics as an alternative to bad governance has arrived let us accept it and support Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, in his efforts to make Benue another Japan.

I promise that if Governor Alia is later found wanting for acts of misconduct in the course of his office, I will personally lead a campaign to have him placed a political guillotine on his neck to swallow.

  • Rivers AG Says Court’s CTC Validates Their Position on Amaewhule, Others

Rivers AG Says Court’s CTC Validates Their Position on Amaewhule, Others

    By Sam Akanimo

The Fubara administration says Rivers State High Court neither declared nor affirmed Martin Amaewhule as Speaker of the state House of Assembly.

The state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dagogo Israel Iboroma, SAN, made this declaration in Port Harcourt, the state capital on Tuesday night.

According to him, the certified true copy (CTC) of court judgment, which he displayed, validates the position of the Fubara administration on the matter.

Accordingly, Iboroma is also urging media practitioners to desist from giving interpretations to court judgements by fiat, emotional or other shades of persuasions.

Rather, he is advising that they should first obtain the judgement in order to read it thoroughly to gain proper understanding or at best, seek competent legal advice before going to press.

He gave the counsel after obtaining the certified true copy (CTC) of the Monday court judgment in Port Harcourt.

The commissioner was restarting his earlier position that there was no court ruling that ever declared or affirmed Amaewhule and 26 others as members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the state House of Assembly.

Iboroma said on Monday, “I briefed the press and made the point that there is a misrepresentation of the judgement of the High Court of Rivers State in Suit No. DHC/20/CS/2024 in social, print, and electronic media.

“My position has been confirmed and vindicated by the Certified True Copy of the court order in Suit No. DHC/20/CS/2024.”

He stated that a court order embodied the enforceable decisions of a court, adding that in this case in focus, the enforceable orders of the court will necessarily entail the specific pronouncements of the court.

He listed the three orders of the court in the judgement to include: “That this Suit be and is hereby dismissed/struck out for want of jurisdiction.

“That the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) be and is hereby joined as 4th defendant.

“That the claimants’ case be and is hereby dismissed for lacking in merit.”

Iboroma further said, “contrary to the false claims and misrepresentation in social, print and electronic media, the court did not make a declaration that Amaewhule is the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, neither did it make a declaration that Amaewhule and 26 others are members of the House and PDP.

“If it were so, it would have been embodied in the court orders which have been circulated to you all and displayed by me here for the purpose of clarity.”

Iboroma regretted that by the deliberate misrepresentation of Monday, the court was painted in bad light and the public misled with such misinformation.

“Whatever finding of fact that is not included in the court order is an Obiter Dictum, which has no binding force.

“Once again, I respectively urge the media to desist from giving any interpretation to any judgement without first reading the content of the judgement and seeking legal advice”, the attorney-general added.

  • Lawmakers Advocate for Increased Funding to Empower Women in Politics

Lawmakers Advocate for Increased Funding to Empower Women in Politics

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives urged the Federal Government to allocate adequate budgetary provisions for training and grooming women in politics.

This resolution followed the adoption of a motion by Mrs. Blessing Amadi, the lawmaker representing Port Harcourt II Federal Constituency, Rivers State.

The House also called on the Ministry of Women Affairs to establish a department with sufficient budget to support, train, and encourage women in politics, and to integrate the role of women in political leadership into secondary school curricula.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over the session, directed the House Committees on Women in Parliament and Women Affairs to collaborate with the Ministry of Women Affairs and other relevant agencies. They were tasked with organizing regular training and seminars for women interested in political careers, especially those in rural areas, emphasizing the importance of grassroots politics.

Amadi, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, expressed concern over the under-representation of women in politics, noting that this issue spans both national and sub-national levels. She highlighted that women hold less than 8% of seats in the National and State Assemblies, attributing this to societal factors such as cultural and religious norms, marriage, and indigeneship, which hinder women’s political participation.

“Full and equitable participation of women in public life is crucial for building and sustaining strong and vibrant democracies,” Amadi stated. Despite significant progress made by women over the years, she noted that they remain underrepresented in political and leadership roles, both globally and in Nigeria.

Amadi stressed the need for proactive measures to equip women with leadership skills, resources, and support to navigate the political landscape and effectively participate in decision-making processes.

In March 2024, Abiola Agoro, the National President of Soroptimist International Nigeria Association, also urged the Federal Government to encourage women’s participation in politics. Speaking during the International Women’s Day celebration at Methodist Girls’ High School in Yaba, Lagos State, Agoro emphasized the importance of government initiatives to motivate more women to engage in politics.

Govt Officials Feasting While Nigerians Suffer – ADP

The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has criticized the current administration, stating that while Nigerians endure severe hardship due to President Bola Tinubu’s policies, government officials are indulging in luxury.

At a national convention in Abuja marking the party’s seventh anniversary, ADP chairman and 2023 presidential candidate, Yabagi Sani, addressed the dire state of the nation. He described the situation as perilous, unpredictable, and insecure, urging President Tinubu to address these issues.

“Our farmers have been driven from their land by those controlling the forests, while the government engages in lavish celebrations,” Sani stated. He emphasized that the government’s primary responsibility is the security of lives and properties, and highlighted the ADP’s plans to revitalize various sectors including the economy, education, science and technology, food security, and industrialization by 2027.

Sani remarked, “The failures of the PDP and APC provide ample campaign material to win the hearts of our people. I urge the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to improve its performance by 2027.”

Reflecting on the party’s journey, Sani called the convention an opportunity to evaluate achievements and plan for the future. “This non-elective convention fulfills a constitutional requirement. I thank our loyal members for their resilience and dedication. Building a young party amidst the influence of well-established parties with vast resources is challenging, but I encourage you to remain steadfast in your commitment to the ADP.”

National organizing secretary Alex Maiyanga encouraged party delegates to work towards securing more electoral victories in the 2027 elections and to support the party’s candidate, Emmanuel Akinnodi, in the upcoming November 16 Ondo governorship election. “Let us take inspiration from Plateau State as we strive towards 2027. The leadership in Ondo must work diligently for Akinnodi’s victory,” he urged.

Senator Pam Dachungyang of Plateau North in the 10th National Assembly also addressed the delegates, urging them to stay true to the party’s ideals to secure future electoral successes.

BREAKING: Rivers Court Rules 27 Pro-Wike Lawmakers Still PDP Members

A Rivers State High Court has declared that Martin Amaewhuke and 26 other lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly remain members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

On Monday, the court dismissed a suit filed by Wosa Amadi and three others, which sought to declare the seats of the 27 lawmakers vacant following their alleged defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in December 2003.

Presiding Judge, Justice Okogbule Gbasam, ruled that the claimants failed to prove the lawmakers had defected to the APC. Justice Gbasam emphasized that defection cannot be established through newspaper publications, radio announcements, or online reports.

The court stated that defection can only be proven through the party membership register, a membership card, and the fulfillment of all membership requirements of the new party.

Further details will be provided as they become available.

    Labour Party Renames Obidient Directorate

The Labour Party has renamed its ‘Directorate of OBIDIENT Affairs’ to the ‘Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration’. This change was announced in a statement on the party’s website on Thursday, signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh.

Ifoh stated, “Following the controversies arising from the creation of the Directorate of OBIDIENT Affairs, the Directorate is hereby renamed the Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration. The inauguration will take place on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at the party’s National Secretariat, Utako, Abuja, at 10 am.”

In May, the LP’s National Working Committee, led by Julius Abure, established the directorate to manage the affairs and interests of the Obidient Movement within the party. Abure warned that the ruling elite and suspected saboteurs might have infiltrated the movement, potentially undermining the party’s efforts.

Abure assured that the directorate would operate independently, with decision-making power resting solely with the members of the Obidient Movement, free from interference by the party’s executives.

However, the leadership of the Obidient Movement reportedly disapproved of the establishment of the directorate.

The Obidient Movement, also known as the ‘Obidients,’ emerged from the 2023 presidential campaign of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate. Obi stated on Wednesday that the movement transcends political parties and lacks ethnic or religious ties. He emphasized that its goal is to hold the government accountable and serve as a beacon of hope for a better Nigeria.
