Ondo Poll: Court Dismisses Suit Challenging Akeredolu’s Validity To Contest APC Primaries

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday dismissed a suit challenging the validity of the primary election that produced Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu as the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2020 election in Ondo State.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Iyang Ekwo, the court held that the suit instituted by Olajumoke Anifowose was statute-barred having been filed outside the 14 days allowed by law for a pre-election matter.

The plaintiff in the suit filed on her behalf by Adesina Oke, contended that section 87 of the electoral Act and article 20 of the APC Constitution were violated in the primaries by the state executive committee and local government committee that conducted the election.

Anifiwoshe had prayed the court for an order declaring the primaries null and void and to bar the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising Rotimi Akeredolu as the governorship candidate of the APC in Ondo State.

Justice Ekwo, while dismissing the suit, noted that Mr. Akeredolu was nominated by the APC on the 20th of July 2020 and the plaintiffs filed the suit on the 29th of the same month which fell within 14 days required by law but the suit became incompetent due to the withdrawal of the initial originating summons and its substitution on the 20th of August 2020.

  • FG Spent ₦6.46 Trillion On Debt Servicing, Personnel In 2020

FG Spent ₦6.46 Trillion On Debt Servicing, Personnel In 2020

The Federal Government spent a total of N6.46tn on debt servicing and workers in 2020, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, has said.

She also disclosed that the government released a total of N1.8tn for capital projects within the year. She noted that out of this, up to N118.37bn was released for COVID-19 capital expenditure.

Ahmed spoke virtually while presenting the 2021 Federal Government approved budget.

Providing updates on the 2020 budget implementation, the minister stated that as at year end 2020, the Federal Government’s retained revenue was N3.94tn, 73 per cent of target.

She said the Federal Government’s share of oil revenues was N1.52tn, representing 157 per cent performance, over and above the prorated sum in the revised 2020 budget, while non-oil tax revenues totaled N1.28tn, 79 per cent of revised target.

On the expenditure side, she said N9.97tn was appropriated, excluding GOEs and project-tied loans, while N10.08tn representing 101 per cent was spent.

Ahmed said, “Of the expenditure, N3.27tn was for debt service and N3.19tn for personnel cost, including pensions.

“As at year end 2020, N1.80tn had been released for capital expenditure, that is, about 89 per cent of the provision for capital.”

She said the Nigerian economy was becoming less dependent on oil, as contributions from the oil sector in funding the 2021 budget would be just 30 per cent.

Ahmed said the bulk of the funding sources for the 2021 budget, 70 per cent, would come from the non-oil sector.
Providing an overview of the revenue framework for 2021, the minister said the aggregate revenue available to fund the 2021 budget was projected at N7.99tn, 36.9 per cent higher than the 2020 projection of N5.84tn.

She noted that to promote fiscal transparency, accountability and comprehensiveness, the budgets of 60 government-owned enterprises were integrated in the Federal Government’s 2021 budget proposal.

Ahmed said, “In aggregate, 30 per cent of projected revenues is to come from oil-related sources, while 70 per cent is to be earned from non-oil sources.

“This, therefore, shows that the Nigerian economy is gradually becoming less dependent on oil. Overall, the size of the budget has been constrained by our relatively low revenues.”

Ahmed, however, pointed out that going by the contributions of the non-oil sector to the funding of national budgets, the economy was systematically moving away from heavy dependence on oil earnings.

She stated that overall budget deficit was N5.6tn for 2021, representing 3.39 per cent of Gross Domestic Product.

The minister explained that the budget deficit would be financed mainly by borrowings, as N2.34tn would be borrowed from domestic and foreign sources each, N709.69bn from multilateral and bilateral loan drawdowns, while privatisation proceeds would provide N205.15bn.

On the expenditure framework, she stated that the 2021 aggregate expenditure, inclusive of GOEs and project-tied loans, was projected to be N13.59tn, which was 25.7 per cent higher than the revised 2020 budget.

Ahmed said, “Recurrent (non-debt) spending, estimated to amount to N5.99tn, is 44.1 per cent of total expenditure, and 13.3 per cent higher than 2020 revised estimates (mainly reflecting increases in salaries and pensions).

“Aggregate capital expenditure of N4.37tn is 32.2 per cent of total expenditure; and 62.9 per cent higher than the 2020 revised budget (inclusive of capital component of statutory transfers, GOEs capital and project-tied loans expenditures).”

The minister stated that at N3.32tn, debt service was 24.5 per cent of total expenditure, and 12.6 per cent higher than 2020 revised budget.

She said the provision to retire maturing bonds to local contractors/suppliers of N200bn was 1.68 per cent of total expenditure

Crude oil price benchmark was retained at $40 per barrel in the 2021 budget, while crude oil production was projected to increase from 1.8 million barrels per day in 2020 to 1.86mbpd in 2021, as economies recover from recession, and moderated by OPEC+ quota agreements.

“Although Nigeria’s total production capacity is 2.5mbpd, current crude production is about 1.7mbpd, including about 300,000bpd of condensates, which indicates compliance with OPEC quota,” Ahmed said.

She said oil GDP was projected to rise by 16.23 per cent in 2021, year-on-year, resulting in about 1.1 per cent increase in non-oil GDP, adding that based on this, real GDP was expected to rise by three per cent in 2021.

The minister further stated that nominal GDP was expected to increase from N139.52tn in 2020 to N142.69tn in 2021 and then up to N151.46tn in 2023.

“Similarly, consumption expenditure is projected to rise from N117.91tn in 2020 to N118.89tn in 2021, reflecting gradual economic recovery,” Ahmed said.

She added, “Inflation is expected to remain above single digit in 2021, given structural issues impacting cost of doing business, including high food distribution cost.”

She also noted that improving the tax administration framework to optimise government revenue was a major thrust of the administration’s Strategic Revenue Growth Initiatives.

  • Lalong’s Govt Full of Lamentations – ADC Chairman

Lalong’s Govt Full of Lamentations – ADC Chairman

    Ugar Ukandi Odey, Jos

The All Progressives Congress, APC, government of Governor Simon Bako Lalong in Plateau State has been described to be “full of lamentations” due to its inability to deliver on electoral promises and the imperative of good governance generally.

Reviewing the almost six years of the Lalong administration in an exclusive chat, the Plateau State Chairman of the Africa Democratic Congress, ADC, Sabiu Musa, said so far in Jos and environs, “there is nothing to point at as achievement of the Lalong administration”.
“Look at Jos and compare it with other state capitals in Nigeria. It is one of the worst cities in the country today. I’m saying this on good authority because I travel a lot – I have been going to different places in the country; and I have been noting the difference”, Sabiu Musa, who was also the party’s gubernatorial candidate in the 2015 and 2019 general elections, said.

According to Sabiu, Lalong showed early signs of lack of focus and concentration when he failed in his first tenure to address his retinue of advisers and assistants of whom he, Sabiu, was one, to share the vision and policy thrust of his administration.

The ADC chieftain also said he is not surprised that urban governance and infrastructure have degenerated to an abysmal low, with little hope that things will get better in the remainder of his tenure.

Sabiu noted that of all parts of the State, Jos North local government area has been the worst for it, pointing out that areas such as Angwa Rogo and Bauchi Road have never had potable water supply since the inception of the Lalong administration in 2015.

Part of the disappointments of Lalong in Jos North, Sabiu listed, also include failing to upgrade and recognize certain traditional and chieftaincy matters and delineations within the Jos North traditional council.

The APC chairman also carpeted the efforts of the Lalong administration in respect of the destroyed Jos Main Market, saying the over one billion naira purportedly used to evacuate debris of the collapsed building should have been used to service or expand some other existing infrastructure because it does not appear certain that Lalong will be able to rebuild the market before his tenure comes to a close.

Sabiu also regretted that the Lalong government has allowed facilities in the old JUTH to waste and decay in the face of daily health needs and challenges the people of Plateau grapple with.
“Nothing appears to be working anywhere, and everywhere people are complaining. This Lalong’s government is full of lamentations”, Sabiu concluded.

Herdsman Kills Osun Farmer, Youths Storm Fulani Settlement

  • Contrasting Fayose’s govt to Fayemi’s is like Satan and Jesus – APC

Contrasting Fayose’s govt to Fayemi’s is like Satan and Jesus – APC

The All Progressives Congress, (APC) in Ekiti State has urged residents of the state to go about their normal activities without any fear of threat to their lives or property.

Reacting to a statement credited to the opposition People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) that people are no longer safe in the state under the present administration of Dr Kayode Fayemi, the APC in a statement signed and released by its Public Relations Officer, Hon. Ade Ajayi pointed out that insecurity is a national malaise and not peculiar to the state alone.

“It is like comparing Satan with Jesus, when the situation under which PDP governed this state is compared to the present situation under the APC government.

“There are several unresolved daylight assassinations and clear cases of robberies which happened during the immediate past government and are yet to be resolved till date due to the personalities involved.

“Residents of the state should ignore the statement. Ekiti is more secured under Fayemi unlike when Fayose and PDP were in the saddle. There was a lot of state-sponsored assassinations then.

“None investigated, none solved. Insecurity is a national malaise and the establishment of the Ekiti branch of the Amotekun security outfit which is highly equipped and motivated by the state government is a pointer to the seriousness of the administration to safe guard lives and properties in the state.

“The opposition is so idle and mischievous, so much that members are daily deserting the party and defecting to our party daily and in drove, while they are too neck-deep in matters that do not concern them.

”The umbrella is torn and their party is going to perpetual extinction.

”The APC is confident that security agents in the state are capable of dealing with any unfortunate incident, and they have already swung into action in the case of the Oil magnate who was kidnapped on Monday and very soon, they shall bring succor to the family of the victim, just like they did during the Yuletide period when a travelling businessman was rescued by the Amotekun outfit in cooperation with other security outfits in the state.

“There have been so many success stories that can be attributed to the Dr Fayemi Government since its inception about two years ago, but these have been ignored by the opposition.

“They are those referred to by one of America’s former Vice President, Spino Agnew as the “nattering nabobs of negativism.

“They would always prefer to serve in hell, rather than be partners in heaven”.

ADP warn Buhari to stop playing politics with insecurity in Oyo

The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has told President Muhammadu Buhari to desist from playing politics with insecurity in Oyo State, reminding him of his primary responsibility of securing lives and properties of all citizens.

This the party said, Buhari should be committed to, irrespective of ethnic, religion or region the citizens come from, noting that, Mr. President’s response to the rising cases of kidnapping, banditry and illegal entrance by invaders, was worrisome.

In a statement on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Prince Adeoye Adelaja, he raised alarm over the invasion of some Jihadist fundamentalists, who were reportedly camped at Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State.

The party urged the government to intervene in activities of bandits and other criminal elements, terrorizing, kidnapping, killing and maiming innocent residents, around Oke-Ogun, Saki, Ibarapa and others, saying residents there were under siege.

The statement further called on critical stakeholders to support Amotekun Corps in tackling criminals in the zone.

“Politicians, especially those in the South West and APC, should avoid playing dirty politics with the issue of this insecurity.

“We call on them to come together and avoid name calling or blame game, because everyone is open and vulnerable to being attacked irrespective of party affiliated,” it said
