Chinese Mining Federation Rejects Allegations of Illegal Activities in Nigeria’s Solid Minerals Sector

The China Mining Federation of Nigeria has refuted recent media reports alleging that Chinese mining firms are infiltrating Nigeria’s solid minerals sector and engaging in activities that threaten national security, economic stability, and the environment.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Federation described the reports as inaccurate and lacking factual basis, insisting that Chinese mining companies operating in Nigeria adhere strictly to the country’s laws and regulatory frameworks.

According to the Federation, Chinese firms conduct their operations in line with Nigerian regulations and under the guidance of the Chinese government, while maintaining close collaboration with relevant Nigerian authorities to enhance transparency and governance within the mining industry.

The Federation noted that Chinese companies have gone beyond regulatory compliance by investing in projects that support Nigeria’s industrial growth in the solid minerals sector. These investments, it said, include the development of local mineral processing facilities, employment opportunities for Nigerians, and skills transfer programmes aimed at boosting local value addition.

By prioritising in-country processing rather than exporting raw minerals, the Federation said these initiatives have contributed to job creation, increased economic retention, and more tangible development benefits from Nigeria’s mineral resources.

Addressing environmental and social concerns, the Federation stated that Chinese mining companies are involved in various community development efforts, environmental management practices, and corporate social responsibility programmes in their areas of operation. It added that such initiatives demonstrate a commitment to sustainable mining and long-term partnership with host communities.

The Federation also dismissed as “entirely unfounded” claims linking Chinese mining companies to terrorism or insecurity. It stressed that Chinese nationals and businesses in Nigeria have themselves been victims of insecurity and therefore share Nigeria’s interest in peace and stability.

“Chinese mining companies have consistently supported Nigeria’s efforts to improve national security and remain willing to cooperate with authorities to ensure a safe and stable environment for business operations and everyday life,” the statement said.

The Federation called on media organisations and stakeholders to uphold professional standards in reporting on China–Nigeria mining relations, urging balanced and fact-based journalism. It warned that the spread of misinformation could harm bilateral relations and weaken the long-standing cooperation between both countries.

Reaffirming its commitment to collaboration, the Federation said it remains ready to work with the Nigerian government and other stakeholders to deepen cooperation in the mining sector, contribute to economic and social development, and ensure that partnerships between Nigeria and China continue to deliver shared benefits.
