A cholera outbreak in Kanam Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State has claimed one life, with over 60 individuals hospitalized across various healthcare facilities.
The Executive Chairman of Kanam LGA, Ayuba Salihu Musa, confirmed the incident through his media assistant, Mazadu Ali, on Tuesday. The outbreak, which began in the communities of Ngyang, Kwalmiya, Banak, and Bakin Kogi, later spread to Dengi, the headquarters of Kanam LGA.
Ali reported that over 60 people have been hospitalized at the General Hospital, the Primary Health Center in Dengi, and several private hospitals.
In response to the outbreak, the Kanam Local Government Council has swiftly taken action to curb the spread of cholera. Medical supplies and equipment have been distributed to key healthcare facilities, including the General Hospital and the Primary Health Care Center in Dengi. The local government has also covered the medical expenses of all patients receiving treatment, whether in public or private hospitals, to alleviate the financial burden on affected families.
In addition, the local government has launched a widespread public health campaign throughout Dengi, aimed at educating residents on preventive measures to reduce cholera transmission. The campaign includes interactive sessions focused on proper sanitation practices and the importance of drinking safe water.
Efforts to reach Plateau State’s Commissioner of Health, Dr. Cletus Bako Shurkuk, for further information were unsuccessful, as his phone was switched off at the time of reporting.
