A law enforcement operation led by the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Mohammed Iyimoga, who also oversees the Ministry of Agriculture, has intercepted a group of criminals attempting to steal over 32 bags of rice from government-owned farms. The suspects were apprehended while trying to transport the stolen rice to neighboring Plateau State.
Speaking on the incident on Thursday in an interview, Hon. Iyimoga revealed that some unscrupulous individuals had hired unsuspecting farmers to harvest rice from government farms under the pretense of legitimate employment.
“We caught some of these criminals in the act, and some ran away”. Iyimoga said. “They confessed that they were hired by a group of Tiv farmers who claimed the land was theirs and promised to pay them for their labour. Unfortunately, these farmers were deceived and unknowingly harvested rice from government property.”
The commissioner, who personally oversaw the interception, stated that the suspects are in custody and are cooperating with security agencies as investigations continue. “We are determined to uncover those behind this criminal act and ensure they are brought to justice,” he assured.
Hon. Iyimoga called on residents of the affected community to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to nearby security operatives. “I urge members of the community to be on the lookout and promptly notify the security outpost near the farm about any unusual movements. Together, we can protect our resources and prevent further theft,” he said.
He emphasized the state government’s commitment to protecting public assets, particularly those aimed at boosting food security. “This government has invested heavily in agriculture to ensure food security for all. Any attempt to undermine these efforts will be met with the full force of the law,” Iyimoga warned.
The arrested suspects are currently being interrogated, with authorities working to identify the masterminds behind the operation.
