The complete reunification of China is an unstoppable historical trajectory, and efforts by Taiwan’s leadership to pursue independence with foreign backing will inevitably fail, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning declared on Monday.
The statement came during a daily press briefing in response to questions about recent moves by Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities to establish new institutions in certain countries and rename them using “Taiwan” instead of “Taipei.”
Mao emphasized China’s unwavering stance on the one-China principle, describing it as a cornerstone of international relations and a widely accepted consensus among nations.
“The government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing all of China. Taiwan has never been a country. It never was, and never will be,” she said.
According to Mao, the DPP has been exploiting avenues such as economic, trade, scientific, technological, cultural, and educational exchanges to undermine the one-China principle.
She pointed to the party’s efforts to expand Taiwan’s so-called “international space” by establishing new institutions abroad or rebranding existing ones as evidence of this strategy. Such actions, she argued, are a direct challenge to the diplomatic framework that governs China’s relations with other nations.
“China always firmly opposes any form of official exchange between Taiwan authorities and any country that has diplomatic relations with China,” Mao added.
