Court Adjourns Trial Of Anthony Joshua’s Driver To February 25

A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver linked to the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of Anthony Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.

The court adjourned the matter to February 25, 2026.

Kayode, 46, was arraigned on January 2 before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun on a four-count charge bordering on dangerous and reckless driving in connection with the accident, which occurred on December 29, 2025.

The charges include dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and damage to property, as well as driving without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to relevant provisions of the Federal Highway Act as applicable in Ogun State.

At the hearing on Monday, the prosecution counsel, Nijiwe Richard, requested an adjournment to enable the transmission of the case file to the Ogun State Attorney-General through the Department of Public Prosecutions for legal advice. He said the request was made in the interest of justice.

The application was opposed by defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, who told the court that the defence was ready to proceed with the trial.

In her ruling, Magistrate Somefun granted the prosecution’s application and adjourned the case to February 25 for further hearing. The defendant was admitted to bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties.

The accident occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when a Lexus SUV conveying Anthony Joshua and members of his team collided with a stationary truck. Ayodele and Ghami later died from injuries sustained in the crash, while Joshua and the driver suffered minor injuries.

Joshua was subsequently discharged from hospital after being declared clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.

The former world heavyweight champion, accompanied by his mother, later visited a Lagos funeral home to pay his last respects before the bodies of Ayodele and Ghami were repatriated to the United Kingdom. The remains were flown to the UK, where funeral prayers were held on January 4, 2026, at the London Central Mosque.

The deaths of Ayodele and Ghami, who were key members of Joshua’s boxing team, drew widespread condolences and tributes from across the global boxing community.
