In a significant ruling, a Federal High Court in Abuja has instructed the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to reopen the investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the 1986 murder of Dele Giwa, the founder of Newswatch Magazine. Dele Giwa was killed in his Lagos office on October 19, 1986, through a letter bomb in a case that has remained one of Nigeria’s most infamous and unsolved murders. The court emphasized the AGF’s obligation to ensure the prosecution and punishment of the killers of media practitioners, including Giwa. The judgment also mandated the investigation and prosecution of individuals involved in the killing of other journalists targeted while performing their lawful duties. The case was brought before the court by the Incorporated Trustees of Media Rights Agenda, seeking the enforcement of the fundamental rights of media practitioners to safety. The court’s decision highlights the importance of safeguarding the lives of journalists and addressing impunity for crimes against media professionals in Nigeria.
