Court remands contractor over alleged N31m fraud

Ilorin, Feb. 20, 2020 A Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin, on Thursday ordered the remand of a contractor, Joseph Komolafe, 60, over alleged N31 million fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ilorin Zonal Office, arraigned Komolafe on a charge of obtaining money by false pretences.

EFCC alleged that the defendant diverted N31 million from the funds awarded to him to supply laboratory equipment to University of Ilorin.

The charge against Komolafe reads: “That you, Joseph Oluwole Komolafe, being the alter ego of Destiny Work Limited, sometime in July, 2015, did defraud  Femimat Concept Limited, of the sum of N31, 500,000.

“When you intentionally induced Femimat Concept Limited to supply laboratory equipment in respect of a contract worth N128, 199, 968 to University of Ilorin in your stead, which it should not have supplied.

“You thereby committed an offence contrary to, and punishable under sections 320 and 322 of the Penal Code, Law of Kwara State.”

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.

Lead Counsel to the Defendant, Mr A.O Adelodun, pleaded with the judge to allow the defence move an oral application for bail.

The Prosecuting counsel, Mr A.A. Adebayo, however, opposed the oral application for bail and urged the judge to remand the defendant at the Correctional Centre in Ilorin.

Justice Abdulgafar turned down the oral application for bail and ordered Komolafe to be remanded in the custody of EFCC.

The case was adjourned to Feb. 21, for hearing of the formal bail application.
