Court Sentences Chinese Man to Death for Murdering Nigerian Girlfriend

In a landmark ruling, a Kano-based High Court has sentenced 47-year-old Chinese national, Frank Geng-Quangrong, to death by hanging for the brutal murder of his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, aged 22.

Residing at Kano Railway quarters, Geng-Quangrong was found guilty on one count charge of culpable homicide after stabbing the victim to death.

Presiding over the case, Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji emphasized the prosecution’s successful demonstration of the defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, highlighting inconsistencies in Geng-Quangrong’s testimony.

According to the Attorney-General of Kano State, Haruna Dederi, the crime occurred on September 16, 2022, at Janbulo Quarters, Kano, where Geng-Quangrong fatally stabbed Sani with a knife for reasons undisclosed.

The victim was rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival by medical personnel.

During the trial, six witnesses and four exhibits were presented by the prosecution, supporting their case under Section 221(b) of the Penal Code.

In his defense, Geng-Quangrong claimed self-defense, alleging that he stabbed Sani after she allegedly assaulted him.

Despite his plea for mercy, the court upheld the death sentence, a decision welcomed by the victim’s mother, Hajiya Fatima Zubairu, who hopes it will deter future acts of violence.
