Curfew Eased: Kaduna and Zaria Celebrate with Busy Streets and Revived Businesses

By   Milcah    Tanimu

Residents of Kaduna and Zaria expressed their relief and joy on Thursday following the state government’s decision to relax the 24-hour curfew that had been in place. The curfew was imposed earlier in the week in response to disruptions caused by the #EndBadGovernance protests.

The unrest, which occurred after the protests were hijacked, resulted in significant damage to both public and private properties, including a commercial bank located at Kaduna Polytechnic.

With the curfew now eased, normalcy is beginning to return. Banks, markets, motor parks, and various public and private offices have resumed operations. Commercial vehicles and motorcycles are actively transporting passengers across the two cities, and security forces are maintaining a visible presence with numerous patrol posts.

Residents have shared their relief and gratitude with the easing of restrictions. Salisu Aminu, a local resident, highlighted the difficulties faced under the strict curfew, noting, “Surviving under the 24-hour curfew was extremely challenging. Many of us struggled daily to provide for our families. We’re relieved that things can start to return to normal.”

Mrs. Ada Joseph, a trader at Abubakar Sheikh Gumi Market, also expressed her relief. “The last few days were incredibly tough,” she said. “We are hopeful that with the curfew relaxation, we will gradually see a return to normalcy.”

In Zaria, residents echoed similar sentiments, celebrating the easing of restrictions. Business activities have surged, with markets like Sabon Gari reopening and experiencing a noticeable increase in customer traffic. Malam Mohammed Nura, a dealer at the market, noted the rapid return of business activity.

Commercial tricycle riders have also resumed their routes, contributing to the city’s vibrant atmosphere. Security personnel continue to patrol key locations, ensuring that the area remains calm and orderly.
