Customs Raises Alarm: Criminals Exploit Fake Presidential Number Plates for Smuggling Vehicles

Chedi Wada, Comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘B,’ Kaduna, expressed concern over smugglers employing fake presidential number plates to transport vehicles across the country. Wada disclosed that these individuals are also using counterfeit plates from various state and local governments, MDAs, Emirate Councils, and other governmental institutions.

During a courtesy call from Bashir Rabe-Mani, Zonal Manager of the News Agency of Nigeria, Kaduna Zonal Office, Wada emphasized the Customs’ commitment to thwarting these tactics. He stated that customs, equipped with well-trained personnel, can easily identify fake numbers and will not be swayed by such tactics.

Wada expressed dismay over smugglers tarnishing the reputation of the presidency by using fake plates on newly smuggled vehicles. He asserted, ‘Let them respect the presidency; we must respect the presidency as a leadership.’

The comptroller revealed the Customs’ successful impoundment of numerous vehicles sporting fake number plates, including those of local governments, ministries, and various government institutions. He stressed the Customs’ role in suppressing anti-smuggling activities, ensuring revenue, facilitating trade, and implementing governmental policies.

Wada urged Nigerians to familiarize themselves with customs operations, emphasizing the importance of understanding the rules and regulations governing the agency. He acknowledged the media’s support in educating the public about customs’ actions and dispelling misconceptions.

Highlighting the Customs’ recent achievements in the zone, Wada underscored the effectiveness of their investigative processes and called on Nigerians to take an interest in customs jobs. He appreciated the visit from the NAN Zonal Manager, assuring continuous collaboration with the press and the agency to combat smuggling and economic sabotage within the zone.”
