Defence Headquarters Confirms Emergence of New Terror Group in North-West Nigeria

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the rise of a new terrorist group, known as “Lukarawas,” operating in the North-West region of Nigeria. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed this development during a briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

Buba explained that this new group originated in the Republic of Niger following the recent coup, which disrupted joint military operations between Nigeria and Niger. Taking advantage of the lapse in cross-border cooperation, the terrorists began infiltrating northern parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states from Niger and Mali.

“The terrorists exploited gaps in border cooperation and difficult terrains to enter remote areas in north-western Nigeria to spread their ideology,” Buba stated. He added that the group initially gained support from some locals who mistakenly believed their intentions were beneficial, a movement that went unreported to security forces.

The DHQ assured the public that troops have intensified Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) efforts to contain the threat. Despite the group’s use of ungoverned areas to evade security forces and intimidate residents, Buba confirmed that military forces are actively locating and eliminating them.

The Nigerian Police Force in Sokoto State also confirmed the presence of the Lukarawas sect in five local government areas, including Gudu, Tangaza, Binji, Illela, and one additional area. The Sokoto Police spokesperson, Ahmed Rufai, stated that the group is armed with sophisticated weapons and has been attempting to impose its beliefs on local communities.
