The Director General of the Delta State Orientation and Communications Bureau, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, has underscored the importance of journalists cross-checking facts with the state governor’s information managers before publishing news stories.

Dr. Oghenesivbe noted that this practice would help prevent misleading the public. He made these remarks at the Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) during the ‘Parley to Party’ event, a platform that features critical stakeholders.

He stressed the necessity for reporters to ensure accuracy, fairness, and objectivity in their work. “News stories must be evidence-based,” he said, highlighting that the Constitution recognizes journalists as the fourth estate of the realm.

The DG lamented the lack of balanced reporting and emphasized the importance of consulting information managers to enhance the credibility of stories. “Some of these stories should have been verified. We have various individuals handling information in the state, with the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, at the helm.”

“Professionals like you are gatekeepers,” Dr. Oghenesivbe continued. “Whether you are a news editor, publisher, or sub-editor, your role is to scrutinize incoming stories or press statements and verify their accuracy with the government. Only then can you provide Deltans with accurate information. Misinformation harms not only the subject but also the media outlet.”

He urged journalists to verify information with relevant authorities before publication and assured that there would be transparency in providing information. “As the watchdogs of society, it is your duty to disseminate correct information.”

Dr. Oghenesivbe also called for a stronger partnership between the media and the state government, emphasizing the media’s role in progress. He commended the current leadership of the NUJ and the professionalism of journalists in the state, stressing the importance of inclusive collaboration.

Additionally, the DG expressed gratitude to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for elevating his position and promised to work even harder.

Earlier, State NUJ Chairman Comrade Churchill Oyowe praised Governor Oborevwori for promoting Dr. Latimore Oghenesivbe to Director General of Orientation and acknowledged the DG’s performance. He assured that the NUJ would continue to work harmoniously with his office and advised members to ensure their publications are thoroughly investigated and verified to uphold the union’s reputation.
