Oscar Wilde once quipped, “With age comes wisdom,” and with a touch of humor, I’d say, “hopefully.” But after spending time in the workplace near the nation’s capital, one might question Wilde’s assertion. Nevertheless, Boomers, and I’m just scraping the tail end of that generation, have some valuable insights to offer their Gen Z counterparts. As for the Millennials, they’ve already paid their dues, with the last ones born in 1994 now approaching 30.
To set the record straight, Boomers aren’t inherently wiser or more capable than the newer generations. The YouTube-era folks have unique learning tools that most of us older folks will never quite master. What we bring to the table is experience.
Every generation believes they’ve discovered the ultimate secret to youth and intelligence, only to realize that youth turns into middle age, which eventually transforms into the golden years. My generation always thinks it’s superior to the one before it, whatever generation that might be.
It’s worth noting that even the band that penned the song “My Generation” grew old, just like everyone else. In the famous words of the song, “I hope I die before I get old.” However, Pete Townsend, who penned those lyrics, turned 78 in May. Oops.
For the Zoomers reading this, keep in mind that one day, you’ll be on the receiving end of jokes and mockery from younger generations. It’s the circle of life. Gen Alpha, you’re next in line.
Now, regarding intellect (or “brains,” as zombie movie fans might shout), intelligence isn’t of much use if you don’t know how to apply it. This is where wisdom comes in. So, allow me to share some wisdom:
1. **Pick Up the Phone:** I understand, you’re part of the texting generation, but consider adapting. In the business world, you often need to call people, especially those older than you who still value a good phone conversation. Plus, texts and emails can easily be misinterpreted. A sarcastic comment in a text might have been a joke if you’d heard it out loud.
2. **Hard Work Pays Off:** Low-paying jobs may suffice in your youth, but they won’t support the finer things in life. Look at Taylor Swift, who dedicated hours to perfect her performances, or Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who worked tirelessly to become the best in the NFL. Hard work is key. Take Mr. Beast, for instance, who built a global brand with his videos and charity work. Try it.
3. **Networking Matters:** Remember, it’s not just what you know but who you know. Build connections with people who can bring in money or have valuable connections themselves. This is the real reason people opt for prestigious colleges.
4. **Master the Art of Budgeting:** Yes, math is involved in real life. You need it to calculate taxes, tips, and your spending capacity. Basic math skills are essential to avoid unnecessary debt, which plagues many younger people. Small daily expenses can add up significantly over time, so create a budget to manage your finances wisely.
5. **Learn Practical Skills:** Your parents were onto something. Their ability to save money often stemmed from doing things themselves. Sewing on a button, cooking, and other practical skills can save you money in the long run. Cooking at home, in particular, is more economical than ordering takeout.
6. **Prioritize Your Health:** As the Millennials have already discovered, your health starts declining even in your 30s. Therefore, focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle through better eating habits, workouts that include weight training, and regular check-ups with various healthcare professionals.
7. **Embrace Mistakes:** Lastly, remember that it’s okay to make mistakes. We’ve all made our fair share of them. Don’t be too hard on yourself, as life is an ongoing learning experience.
This is just the beginning of your journey through the “SparkNotes for Life.” There’s much more to learn, particularly in the realms of relationships, friendships, family, faith, parenting, and more. Much of this wisdom, you’ll gather through your own experiences. So embrace the journey and don’t be too tough on yourself along the way.
