Do You Have Typhoid or Malaria? Here’s How to Tell the Difference

Must read

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Understanding the difference between malaria and typhoid fever is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Malaria vs. Typhoid: Causes and Transmission
Malaria is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, while typhoid fever is caused by the Salmonella typhi bacterium, typically spread through consuming contaminated food and beverages.

Recognizing Fever Patterns
Malaria often presents with cyclical fevers known as paroxysms, where the fever rises and falls in distinct stages. Typhoid fever, in contrast, shows a “stepladder” fever pattern, gradually increasing over several days.

Symptoms: Key Differences
While both diseases can cause fever, their symptoms differ significantly:

– Malaria Symptoms: High fever, chills, shivering, an enlarged spleen and liver, anemia, jaundice, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and sweating.
– Typhoid Symptoms: Severe headaches, gastrointestinal issues like constipation or diarrhea, stomach pain, a high fever lasting about 10 days, an enlarged spleen, impaired liver function, and a small red-dot rash on the abdomen and chest.

Diagnosis: Testing for Malaria and Typhoid
Diagnosing these diseases requires different tests. Malaria is typically easier to diagnose with a blood test for malarial parasites, while typhoid fever may need additional tests such as the typhi dot, bone marrow, and stool analysis.

Complications to Watch For
Malaria can lead to serious complications, including seizures, coma, and death, with a mortality rate of 15.3 per 100,000 cases. Typhoid fever, if untreated, can result in intestinal perforation, peritonitis, and potentially fatal outcomes.

Blood Testing Insights
Both diseases can cause anemia and splenomegaly, but typhoid is more commonly associated with relative bradycardia, a slower heart rate despite high body temperature, and a decrease in white blood cells.

In regions where both malaria and typhoid are prevalent, it’s often necessary to conduct blood tests for both infections to accurately identify the illness.
