Taking a break is a chance for people in a relationship to explore what not being together feels like, take time for personal growth, and look at their relationship from a distance.

Taking a break in relationship most at times don’t work out as intended. When you have get into a fight with your partner you make up and move on but when the fight extends to weeks and months, would you take a break?

According to Ann Rosen Spector, PhD, a clinical psychologist in Philadelphia, one of the best ways to repair a relationship is to put some distance between you and your partner by taking a break. “Separation can be very healing,” she says. “When a situation is complicated, having distance to get clarity is important.” And a break is the way to get it.

However before considering on taking a break, you should ask yourself the following questions:

1. Are you proposing a break to avoid your partner’s or your own negative behavior?

2. Are you proposing a break because you’re afraid of breaking up with them?

3. Are you proposing break because you don’t know how to communicate with your partner?

4. After the break what next?

There are three reasons why people go on a break:

1. You want to see if your partner will miss you during your time apart.

2. You want to see if you’re missing a connection that you can find other people.

3. You need space in your relationship.
