DSS Issues Warning Against Inflammatory Remarks, Advocates for Peace in November 11 Election

By Milcah Tanimu

The Department of State Services (DSS) has expressed concern over the increasing use of provocative language by influential figures and representatives of non-governmental entities, both within and outside the country. Such statements, it notes, have the potential to disrupt public peace and harmony.

The DSS emphasizes the negative impact of divisive rhetoric on national unity, urging citizens to avoid demarketing or subverting the country through misleading narratives. With the recent elections and related disputes concluded legally, the agency calls for a collective effort in nation-building without animosity.

The DSS specifically addresses key players and their supporters in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa States, urging compliance with electoral laws during the gubernatorial elections on November 11, 2023. It emphasizes the need to prevent actions that could undermine the electoral processes.

The agency highlights its collaboration with INEC, other security agencies, and relevant NGOs to ensure smooth elections in the mentioned states. It encourages stakeholders, regardless of political affiliations, to engage in respectful and constructive conversations that foster understanding.

The DSS calls for a shift in public commentaries towards unity and peace, essential for national development and security. It advises those on election duties, including the media and civil society, to avoid actions that may incite sentiments or lead to a breakdown of law and order.

While advocating for patriotism and loyalty to the nation, the DSS warns that any individual or group engaging in illegitimate or disruptive activities will face decisive legal consequences. The agency calls on citizens to prioritize the collective interest over individual or parochial concerns and promote dialogue for the nation’s progress. Together, it emphasizes, a stronger and more secure future can be built for the country.
