Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 10 suspects over alleged involvement in illegal mining activities along the Ilorin–Ogbomosho axis.
The arrests followed credible intelligence on unlawful mineral excavation and transportation in parts of Kwara and Oyo states, according to a statement issued by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale.
Oyewale said the suspects comprise nine truck drivers and one escort. They were allegedly found transporting solid minerals without the required licences, permits, or regulatory approvals.
Recovered minerals include lithium, tin, and lepidolite, which are classified as regulated solid minerals under Nigerian law.
The EFCC noted that the suspects were arrested during an operation targeting illegal mining and related economic crimes in the area.“ They will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the statement said.
The commission reiterated its commitment to curbing illegal mining, which it said deprives the country of revenue and poses environmental and security risks.
