Elon Musk Faces Backlash After Announcing Removal of ‘Block’ Feature on X

By Daniel Edu

Elon Musk, the owner of the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), faced strong criticism from users after announcing the company’s plan to remove the “block” feature. The “block” function allows users to prevent specific accounts from interacting with them and vice versa. Many users consider this feature essential for filtering out trolls and unwanted content.

Musk’s announcement came in response to a user’s question about the utility of the “block” feature versus the “mute” feature. While “mute” allows users to hide posts from specific accounts without those accounts knowing, “block” prevents interactions entirely.

Musk suggested that the “block” feature would be removed, except for direct messages (DMs), and he claimed that “block” makes no sense. This proposal prompted a strong negative reaction from users who rely on the “block” feature to prevent harassment and unwanted interactions.

Critics argued that removing the “block” feature could lead to increased harassment and the spread of false information. They also highlighted that without the “block” feature, the platform might become an echo chamber of negative engagement.

Some users speculated that the removal of the “block” feature could lead to more people leaving the platform altogether, as they wouldn’t be able to protect themselves from harassment and unwanted content.

Overall, Musk’s announcement received backlash from a variety of users, including conservatives, liberals, journalists, and influencers, who criticized the potential negative consequences of removing the “block” feature from X.
