At the National Dialogue Conference on Gender-Based Violence in Kano, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II ignited a heated debate on domestic violence. Speaking passionately, the former Emir of Kano advised his daughters to retaliate if physically assaulted by their husbands. His bold statement emphasized the need to challenge a culture of violence often overlooked in many communities.
Sanusi clarified that his remarks were not an endorsement of violence but a call for justice and dignity, deeply rooted in Islamic principles. The Emir highlighted alarming data from Kano’s Shari’a courts, revealing that 45% of domestic violence cases involved severe injuries, such as broken bones and lost teeth.
He urged victims to seek legal recourse and called on society to confront and eliminate gender-based violence. Sanusi’s advocacy reinforces his long-standing commitment to women’s rights and fostering accountability in line with Islamic teachings. His speech has sparked discussions on reforming societal norms to uphold respect and equality within families.
