The Nigerian government has announced its decisive step to discontinue borrowing from both local and foreign sources. This decision is intertwined with the elimination of petrol subsidies and the harmonization of exchange rates.
Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, made this declaration after the inaugural Federal Executive Council meeting held in Abuja on Monday.
Edun highlighted that the proceeds saved from the subsidy removal would be reinvested across various sectors to enhance government revenue and cultivate an improved business climate for domestic and international investment.
He underlined that the additional revenue from the subsidy removal would facilitate the implementation of short-, medium-, and long-term measures to mitigate its impact.
Furthermore, Edun emphasized the commitment of the administration led by President Bola Tinubu to rescue the economy from its prolonged challenges.
Echoing this sentiment, Doris Uzoka-Anite, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, revealed a surge in investment opportunities across sectors such as oil and gas, healthcare, solid minerals, and agriculture. She articulated her ministry’s collaboration with other governmental bodies to fulfill the president’s goal of generating employment for Nigeria’s burgeoning youth population.
In alignment with this economic strategy, Dr. Ali Pate, the Minister of Health, highlighted the exploitation of key segments within the health sector to stimulate economic growth and employment creation.
Dr. Pate conveyed that the president had urged them to make bold and inventive decisions for the nation’s benefit, and these steps had already been initiated.
He affirmed that the president’s determination to steer the economy toward progress was evident from his immediate removal of petrol subsidies upon taking office.
Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, relayed the president’s call for transparency among cabinet members, particularly in disseminating essential information.
Idris encouraged the media to diligently verify and fact-check their stories to ensure accurate public information.
