The family of 20-year-old Daniel Ikeaguchi who was allegedly shot dead by a policeman in Elelenwo, near Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has instituted a N1bn suit against the Nigeria Police Force at a High Court in the state capital.
According to the family lawyer, Noble Njoku, in an application which was filed on October 16, 2020, via an originating motion of fundamental human rights, amongst others, is asking for “a declaration that the killing of Daniel Ikeagwuchi Onyeukwu on the 19th of September 2020 at Elelenwo in Obio/Akpor LGA, Rivers State by the Nigeria Police is unjustified and unlawful.”
The suit is also asking the court to declare that the continuous refusal of the Nigeria Police Force to arraign and prosecute the alleged culprits contravenes the deceased right to fair hearing.
Njoku said that the suit is seeking for an order of the court awarding the sum of N1bn to the family of late Daniel Ikeaguchi as damages for the alleged unlawful killing, saying hearing of the case has been scheduled for November 10, 2020.
Recall that four police officers from the anti-kidnapping unit of the Rivers State Police Command and the alleged killer cop identified as Sergeant Ben Isiah were subjected to an orderly room trial at the State Criminal and Investigation Department.
