Ex-Liverpool Star Explains Why Arsenal Won’t Win the Premier League This Season

Arsenal’s blistering start to the season has reignited hopes of a genuine Premier League title challenge, with Mikel Arteta’s side sitting four points clear at the top after winning nine and drawing one of their last ten matches in all competitions. Their consistency, creativity, and attacking flair have led many to believe this could finally be the year the Gunners end their 21-year title drought — last achieved under Arsène Wenger’s “Invincibles” in 2003/04.

Having finished as runners-up to Liverpool and Manchester City in recent seasons, Arsenal appear stronger and more mature under Arteta. However, former Liverpool and Manchester City goalkeeper David James remains unconvinced they can sustain their challenge.

Speaking to The Metro, James praised Arsenal’s progress and tactical evolution but maintained doubts about their ability to maintain form over the course of a gruelling campaign.

He highlighted their resilience — particularly in their recent comeback against Manchester City — and acknowledged the team’s improved defensive structure and composure. Yet, he questioned whether the Gunners could continue performing at that level once the pressure intensifies in the latter stages of the season.

James also warned that juggling both Premier League and Champions League commitments could stretch the squad too thin. According to him, experienced contenders like Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool possess the depth and know-how to handle title-race pressures better than Arsenal.

The ex-England international further suggested that Arsenal’s divided focus between domestic and European competitions last season cost them vital momentum in the league. While he credited Arteta for instilling discipline and belief, he insisted that the real challenge will come when fatigue and expectations rise in the season’s final months.

Concluding his remarks, James said that although Arsenal are undoubtedly improving, their rivals’ experience and superior squad depth could once again determine the destination of the Premier League trophy.
