Tragic news emerges as a Chinese student and video game streamer, identified as Li, succumbs to exhaustion after streaming for five consecutive nights. Li, a final-year student at Henan Pingdingshan Vocational and Technical College, was fulfilling a contractual obligation with a Chinese media company for an internship crucial to his graduation. The terms required 240 hours of livestreaming within 26 days, placing a heavy burden on Li as he struggled to balance academic responsibilities and personal life. Li’s housemates raised concerns when they found him unresponsive, shedding light on the challenges faced by livestreamers in maintaining a work-life balance. The company, while denying coercion into night shifts, acknowledged the broader issue within the industry. Li’s family has been offered 5000 Yuan (£555) by the company as a gesture of goodwill, but any further compensation is subject to legal procedures. The father is considering legal action and exploring compensation avenues through insurance.
Exhaustion claims the life of a Chinese student engaged in prolonged live-streaming.
