By Daniel Edu

Tragedy struck on the Benin-Lagos Expressway in Edo State as a collision between a Toyota Hiace bus and a Dangote truck resulted in the death of 11 passengers and left eight others injured. The incident occurred near the Ovia Bridge around 11 am on Thursday.

According to an eyewitness, the bus, en route to the East and heading towards Edo State, had slowed down at a deteriorated section of the road when the Dangote truck, traveling at high speed towards Benin, crashed into it. Some passengers lost their lives instantly, while those with injuries were quickly transported to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for medical treatment.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state, Paul Okpe, confirmed the crash. He revealed that three vehicles were involved in the accident, with the truck colliding with the Hummer bus and narrowly avoiding a Kia vehicle. The casualties were primarily from the bus, and the injured and deceased were taken to the hospital by FRSC ambulances. The exact cause of the accident is under investigation by the FRSC’s accident investigations department. The vehicles involved have been impounded at the nearby police station close to the toll gate
