FCT Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, has called on the global community to expedite efforts to tackle environment confronting the world.
Aliyu made the call at the 30th National Annual Conference of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), with to the theme, ” Global Environment Challenges : Risk and Opportunities”, held in Uyo Akwa-Ibom state.
Aliyu, who was represented by the Special Assistant on Technical Matters, Tpl. Mubdiyu Mustapha, identified some of the environmental challenges as waste disposal, ozone layer depletion, loss of biodiversity, desertification, acid rain, deforestation, pollution amongst others.
The minister noted that the theme is apt in view of the frequency and magnitude of environmental challenges facing the world presently.
“No one is in doubt of the fact that our environment is plagued with serious challenges, many of which are worsening by the day, leading to a state of environmental crisis,” she stressed.
The minister revealed that the FCT Administration has over the years have used substantial energy and resources to combat environmental challenges such as improper waste management, indiscriminate tree felling for charcoal production, open defecation amongst others.
Meanwhile the Minister was confirmed with the Honorary Fellow of the Nigerian Environmental Society, FNES for her contributions towards protection and management of the FCT environment.
